A few questions about the black delivery driver who says two white men shot at him

Just trying to understand what happened.
1. The story says this guy is a Fed Ex driver, but that he was driving a Hertz van. I assume that is the Hertz rent-a-car company. Why would a Fed Ex driver be driving a rented van with Hertz markings on it?
2. The incident occurred in Brookhaven, MS, but the article says the driver lives 50 miles away from Brookhaven. That's a long way away. Why would his route take him so far from his home?

A Black FedEx driver in Mississippi says he was making deliveries late last month when he was chased by a pair of white men, one of whom fired multiple bullets into his vehicle as he tried to escape them.
D'Monterrio Gibson, 24, said he believes the men pursued him because he is Black and because they thought he didn't belong in their neighborhood. Now he's asking the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation to take the case from local police and for the men to face federal hate crime charges.
Gibson, who lives in Utica, about 50 miles from Brookhaven, where the encounter occurred, said the incident has left him traumatized.
He said he dropped off a package on a street called Junior Trail at about 7 p.m. on Jan. 24 while wearing his FedEx uniform. He said he was not in a FedEx truck but in a Hertz van with the rental company's markings on the sides.
After the drop-off, a man in a white pickup truck began following him closely while honking his horn, Gibson said. He drove past a couple of houses and encountered a man standing in the middle of the road with a gun pointed at him, he said. The man was mouthing the word "stop," Gibson said.
Gibson said he swerved to get around the man, who started shooting toward the rear of the Hertz vehicle. He said he called his manager, who told him to return to the FedEx station. The pickup truck chased him all the way to an interstate, he said.
He eventually was able to get away from the pickup truck and called police to report what happened. He said a dispatcher interrupted him and asked whether he had been on Junior Trail.

Almost certainly a contractor, doing whatever he has to do.

Fed ex and UPS rent a lot of vans, especially for rural deliveries.
A route 50 miles from someone's home is nothing.

This happens commonly when there is a truck shortage.

No it's not.

So these alleged perps said he didn’t belong in their neighborhood and shot at him? Now this never happens when the roles are reversed…not ever(hint, it actually did happen to me except the trigger was not fired).

Maybe they were just trying to rob him?

I know for a fact they will use non company vehicles to deliver as I have seen it frequently at my house around the holidays.
With regards to distance, I don’t know you can say a lot about that. He may live more rural and drive 25 or 30 miles for work. That’s certainly possible. I have no idea how big a driver’s route is.

Actually can be common with the way routes are owned privately and could have breakdowns of existing trucks, but bad decision not to have magnetic signs to put fed ex on the rentals?

Got it. Thanks.

quote:That has happened a lot since the pandemic. I've seen deliveries from Amazon, UPS, and FedEx in rental cars. Mostly Enterprise up here in Jersey. Can't tell you why, but it has been very common.

quote:Really depends on where the distribution center is. He could live 15-20 miles from there, but have a route that is up to 30 miles in the opposite direction. Doesn't sound too odd.

Not sure why there are questions about him at all. The redneck ISIS tried to stop him and shot at his van based on a suspicion. Should be charged with attempted kidnapping and attempted murder.

Yep, truck drivers, technicians, salesman, construction workers, etc. RARELY travel more than "50 miles away" from their homes.

Shouldn't they investigate first?

I think this probably happened but is a perfect example of all the fake "hate crime" stories. People won't believe this one because 9 out of 10 of these are made up. At least this young guy was out working a legit job at 7pm. If there are bullet holes in the van and the police made contact with some residents out there, I would give him the benefit of the doubt.
At least more so than someone who found a noose in a tree.

With the information known at this time, it seems as if he was really just doing his job. Unless some new information comes up (ie he had just nabbed a child and threw it in the back of the van), those guys appear very guilty.
The thing that I dont agree with is implying that this was racially motivated, which is really what the media wants to push. It could be and it could not be. But there will now be the assumption that they would've let a white guy go without chasing him down. I have no idea how you would even know that unless you can read minds or they have some history of doing this.

I’ve seen plenty of deliveries without a truck but never without a uniform.
