Who took martial arts when they were younger?

I’d been watching YouTube videos of people getting their black belts. I took Karate when I was a teenager. Only made it to yellow belt. Did take 3rd place in Kata at a tournament in Tennessee.
A friend of mines son hasn’t graduated high school and is already a 2nd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do.
I wish I never quit. I was 14 when I did, but I was lazy and didn’t have the discipline and respect for it.

Didn't, wish I had. My kids have done some, not enough to be useful.

Shotokan karate as a youngster. Have studied on & off all my life. Black belt after many decades. My childhood neighbor that started with me has made it a lifelong profession. He is the highest ranked in the US. Studied in Japan many years to attain 7th degree. Something to watch a 78 year old flow through a kata.
I encourage all parents to consider it.

4th degree black here. Was national champion in the organization and competed in US Open for ISKA in Disney World.
Also have taken BJJ, hopkido, Muay Thai, and Krav Maga.

Black belt in Tang Soo Do. Several years of Judo, boxing and kickboxing. Kept me out of trouble and learned how to handle myself.

My buddy and I used to try and break boards in his basement. That count?

Took Tae Kwan Do for about a month when i was 10, right after The Karate Kid came out.. there was a boom, classes were full , then most of us moved on to the next thing…. Which was BMX, then skateboarding…. Im sure that Cobra Kai recently inspired a while new generation to take up karate for a month ….

I did not but by kid does it. He is a blue belt. He enjoys it and I think it helps with discipline.
It's expensive as hell for two 30 minute sessions a week, and one on saturday morning that we make half the time.

I learned Taekwondo from a fat white guy. Didn't stay in it long because I think the guy ended up being in some shady shite and my parents didn't care for that.

TKD in a few places.
Always got too busy with other things. If Ki Yoon was still around, I would have stuck it out. He was a traditional Korean teacher and not pumping out black belts to keep the checks coming. He taught all the classes and didn’t delegate to some recently leveled black belt.
He died of ALS about 10-11 years ago.

Did as a teenager. It became pretty clear some dojos are money making scams. The hidden fees can drain the wallet.

It's not very practical against someone that knows how to fight unless you are super high level.

Got to Shodan about 8 years ago in Alabama then had to give it up, would like to do it again. We used to watch the old JKA kata videos. The solidity and flow of the movement seems completely lost watching modern competitive kata.

I don't think they had classes in my area when I was young but I have my grandson in karate. He is 14 and a second degree brown belt. He works very hard and is a good student. I hope he never has to fight but having him in karate is better than the kids who do nothing but play video games and get over weight. It teaches discipline.
