Yes I usually buy my own cheap fmj to shoot. I went and got a 9mm from a place that has a range. $50 for 50 9mm?
Dang. I mean you can go to academy buy at retail, double it and be less.

Yeah that’s too much $$ for me. I’ll just shoot 38spl which academy usually has for about $35 per box of 50.

9mm brass FMJ is usually around $20 per box of 50 there. Good enough for me.

It was at Academy. Stop in every few days just to check. One day it was there. Another local gun shop had some good federal 158 grain ammo but it was over $65. Draw the line somewhere between there and $50

Why don't you bring your own ammo? The shooting range will always double the price of ammo. They have ammo there to make money and to give you the convenience factor. Just like you pay more for milk at Walgreens instead of going to Walmart.

Plus, keep in mind that a lot of ranges bought ammo during the panic. When they had no ammo to sell, very few shooters showed up (at least it was like that at Precision).

So they are trying to sell it at prices based on sky-high purchase cost. Can't blame them - but people customers have the option of just ordering online.

Because I just bought the gun. I wasn't sure I would get the gun. Last time at Academy I caught a delay. This time I got a proceed. So I was like damn "let's shoot" so I got one box of 9mm ears, eyes and a target. $67 out the door with no range fees.

This is my first 9mm so I didn't have 9mm rounds handy.

I'm going to my normal range tomorrow with the boxes of Academy ammo I bought after this post.

Was it you was waiting on a Canik? If not the Canik what’d you get? How’d you like it?

I have no need for another gun but it’s been two months since I bought one and I’m getting the itch again.

First, you cannot compare the two businesses. Academy & a gun range are very different. Second, people who buy ammo at a range usually do so because of convenience or bad planning or maybe renting a gun with a caliber they don’t own. For all those reasons, they can support selling for a higher price. Third, ammo is still not in plentiful supply so the higher price prevents people from wiping them out & not having ammo for the shooter at the range.

There are plenty of examples of this dynamic in life. A convenience store sells all its food much higher than a Walmart for example. You’re paying for the convenience. If you want bulk pricing, you know where to go

Range buys are definitely for convenience. If I needed something instantly, I used to stop at the Walmart I passed on the way to the range, but they stopped carrying most calibers.

I don't think that is mentioned enough as a cause for the current prices. I know there's a shortage, but we all know Walmart: they always would have the lowest prices on anything. You know damn well, if they still carried pistol ammo, they'd have SOMETHING at under $300 a case today. You might not know the brand, but I haven't seen familiar brand in awhile.
