Now that we are past the peak of Omicron, let’s compare the #s: (Data is from LDH’s Covid site) https://ldh.la.gov/coronavirus

Cases
Delta Peak - 6k/day
Omicron Peak - 15k/day (2.5x Delta’s peak)

Hospitalizations
Delta Peak - 3000
Omicron Peak - 2300 (25% less than Delta though there is a common thought that as much as 40% may be with Covid and not necessarily for Covid)

Vents
Delta Peak - 480
Omicron Current - 180 (63% decrease from Delta)
*not confident to say peak yet bc haven’t seen decline yet but with the other indicators declining this seems likely to start decline soon.

I know we like to say Omicron was less severe than Delta but I think it is important to actually see it in the numbers.

Also according to the Covid estimator site https://covidestim.org/ 86% of La has been infected by one form or another of Covid. That is up from approximately 70% after Delta surge finished in September.

That’s because healthy adults are getting Omicron

The data is faulty, could be admitted for gunshot wound, car accident, etc... and just happened to test positive on admittance, especially for Omicron

same - although I lost my sense of taste for about 4 hours yesterday. I was at a funeral with numerous positive cases about a week ago - IDK

About 38% fully vaccinated at the Delta peak and 50% fully vaccinated at the Omicron peak.

Though deaths are nearly split 50/50 in a 50/50 fully vaccinated state. It was 53/47 un-fully vaccinated for the last week of data.

There is a lot of fear porn going around about this new Omicron variant but I just don't see how it's a threat given how widespread OG omicron has been. Who is left to get infected by the new strain?

What makes those numbers even more stark is that Omicron was more transmissible than Delta, meaning that the lower hospitalization and vent numbers were rendered despite more infections in the population.

My suspicion that Omicron may turn out to be a net positive for the population seems to be on track.

Also, I’m not aware of another aggressive variant emerging anywhere right now.

All signs are positive.

As predicted when the news first broke months ago.

There is a variant of Omicron that's more contagious

It really isn't that big of a deal. Between vaccinated and natural immunity from previous infections, damn near everyone has some level of antibodies to fight off a new infection. I don't think anyone except politicians and weird hypochondriac Reddit types care anymore.

Haven’t heard about that. (But I have been working long hours.) What is known about it?

About half of my patients in the hospital incidentally have Covid (asymptomatic, has nothing to do with why they’re in the hospital, and we tested them JUST because they were being admitted). It has generally remained about that during omnicron wave. So I’d say that 40% number is roughly accurate, if not a bit low, based on my experience.

How is this accurate when Omicron has 120% more cases per day? I think you are WAY off on this statistic since your statistic would only be valid if case cases were the same.

According to the Covid estimator site, just over 10% of La’s population but I’m convinced that those folks either live under a rock or have some sort of magic blood running thru them that stops Covid in its tracks.
