Going to take the homer glasses off and look at Payton post 2009

While like many of you I am still in shock that our coach, still in the prime of his career and with years left on his contract, just up and quit on the team. 2009-2010 we got to the mountain top. We certainly had a group of players that should have left us in serious contention for years to come.
And while we we made the playoffs more times than not, we never really were serious contenders outside of the 2011 and 2018 year. The 2018 year in which we blame the no-call (and we should) but we also failed to capitalize once the call happened. And we had numerous chances in that game after the no-call.
2010 - 11-5 and lost to Seattle (Beastquake)
2011 - 13-3 and lost to San Fran (Vernon Davis)
2012 - 7-9 (no playoffs)
2013 - 11-5 and lost to Seattle (were never really in it)
2014 - 7-9 (no playoffs)
2015 - 7-9 (no playoffs)
2016 - 7-9 (no playoffs)
2017 - 11-5 and lost to Minny (Miracle)
2018 - 13-3 and lost to Rams (no call)
2019 - 13-3 and lost to Minny (upset)
2020 - 12-4 and lost to Tampa Bay (offense gave it away)
2021 - 9-8 (no playoffs)
I guess I feel with Payton we always had a chance to be in the game, but we were a great regular season team for the most part and a complete flop in the playoffs.
So maybe a new coach (Dennis Allen?) can do better because honestly being regular season champs and complete letdowns in the playoffs gets old.
Maybe there is something when people post Sean Payton and Mike McCarthy's stats and they are exactly the same.

2011 will always hurt me the most. That team was unbelievably good.

The double whammy with LSU losing to Alabama made it so much worse.

You can feel that way, but it was almost always the defenses inexplicably falling on their face that led to those “flops.” Yes obviously he’s the HC of both sides of the ball, but that’s not the conversation we’re having now.

Throw in all of Sean's personal problems. I agree with what many have said is that he was an elite coach that kept us in most games, but tended to choke in the playoffs. He is the Peyton Manning of coaches.

Disagree
I feel we were serious contenders in 2018 through 2020. and Should have the very least went deeper in 2010 and 2017. So many of those games if one thing goes different we win. And most of those weren't the fault of coaching. Coach didn't make Jared Cook fumble the ball, M. williams miss a tackle, Original no call, Second no call on push off (2019 Minnesota) 2010 I'll give you you that one because beast quake was just a clinic on how not to play defense.

That was brutal as a fan.

2019 and 2020 I felt the offense was just not there and I couldn't get my hopes up.
Offense was god awful in the 2020 playoffs.

Right. The years the defense gave it away were earlier, and then the defense stepped up and the offensive firepower wasn't there. Or maybe it was also a mix of bad coaching in pressure situations?

SP and Skylene are Newlyweds. They will celebrate their First Anniversary this summer. Skylene has no children. Perhaps she'd like to change that.
Being a Newlywed Groom and trying to start a new family with your Newlywed Bride is no place for an NFL Head Coach to be.
He left a solid foundation. Sure, he's no Bill Belichick when it comes to winning SBs, but, we can't blame him for that.

Forgot about 2012, 2014 - 2016 ...

Maybe we get better, but odds are heavily against that

Sean Payton is one of the greats. What he did with the Saints is amazing, regardless of the fact that he only 1 SB.

They dated for like a decade first

Fun fact, LSU/Bama played on 11-5-11, then Pats/Giants played on 11-6-11. The BCS CG and Super Bowl that season were both rematches of these games. The Giants actually won both of them though while Bama avenged their loss
I was at the MNF game that year when we beat the shite out of the Giants, it pains me to this day that we didn't get to play them again in the NFC CG. The Superdome was a house of horrors for the Giants, no way they were coming into NOLA and beating us, even players on that Giants team said they had a sigh of relief when the 49ers won.

You’re in contention anytime you make the playoffs. There are 30 teams that would kill for that stretch of success and “contention”

No doubt, but he left so much on the table.

Sure, by definition of making the playoffs you're always in contention.
There was also a 0% chance the Siemian led offense would have beaten the Rams this year.

that's not fair to say imo. bigger problem was just the general team injuries in many areas of our roster. it's possible the defense put up a stellar performance, they did so many times during season.

A lot was left in the table for sure, but some of it he had little to no control over.
