My understanding is that the only defensive coach retained is DL coach Larry Johnson.
OL Coach was also canned.
If he can get the D fixed they are gonna be scary with that offense.

Why is he cleaning house? His season, to an outsider, wasn't that bad that he had to fire his entire ...but 1...staff? Pressure from the administration?

Fired defensive staff sans Johnson.
Only offensive coach fired was the OL coach.
The defense was horrible.
Too many 5 star guys on defense for it to be that bad.
Larry Johnson stays because he is probably the best DL coach in all of footall.

He inherited this staff from Urban.
Perhaps he wants to bring his own people in.

He lost to a PAC 12 school and Michigan. He has to blame someone for the perceived underperformance.
The reality is the QB cost them the Oregon game. He changed QBs after that and had a solid offense from that point forward. Lack of toughness and youth on defense cost him the Michigan game. They gave up too many rushing yards. Surprised about the offensive changes , not the defensive ones. Their defense has not performed up to its talent level in years. It predates Day.

The only offensive change he made was to the OL, which fans have wanted for years. They think Stud is a below average recruiter, and he is

Was all this really necessary after 2 losses and a freak come from behind win in the Rose Bowl?

Yes, the defense was a clown show.

When the expectation is to compete for and win national championships and you have a bottom 25% passing defense for 2 years in a row I would say yes. OSU was 97th in the country this year in pass defense and even worse in 2020. A defensive overhaul was warranted when you have top 5 talent on the defense and don't have a top 50 defense.

What are your thoughts on al Washington?

It's a bit hard as an outsider to judge him for his time at OSU and I'll tell you why. This may be a long winded response but it could give you some context.
2019 Washington was hired and took over for Bill Davis who was Meyer's best man at his wedding and did his job in an awful manner. He didn't recruit well and the LBers looked lost in 2018. In 2019 OSU had one of the best defenses in the country. All the "good" credit went to Jeff Hafley who immediately went on to become HC at Boston College. However, the LBers were the weakest part of the defense that year, because OSU had Chase Young and Okudah/Arnette/Wade as the 3 corners. It wasn't a bad unit, but they were all new starters which helped the team a ton in 2020.
2020 rolls around and you have COVID, which we all know the B1G went stupid with and cancelled the season then didn't cancel etc etc. OSU had no spring or really normal fall camp, and everyone was dealing with weird testing policies etc. OSU only played 6 games in the regular season, and there were deficiencies in the back 7, but there wasn't really time to iron things out. I would say in 2020 the LBers were the best unit on the team overall. DL underperformed and the secondary was pretty bad.
2021, 4 LBers who took all the snaps leave, along with 2-3 guys who transfer out who were juniors/seniors. All new starters/reserves basically in the unit. The entire defensive scheme looks lost from day one here. Coombs was probably out of his league as DC, which makes everyone look worse on the entire team. The LBers aren't going to react well if the DL isn't blocking well and they don't know their keys etc. Minnesota HC said they knew exactly what we were going to do because it's the exact same thing OSU did the year before. You have an entire offseason and change nothing to a defense that was AWFUL in 2020. We moved 2 other players over to LBer during the season and in the Rose Bowl. He brought in 2 stud LBers in the 2022 class (Hicks and Powers) but both are from Ohio and probably were OSU bound no matter what.
So he had 1 good unit in 3 years, recruiting was fine but nothing spectacular, and the scheme certainly didn't help him in 2020/2021 but unsure how much of that was his fault
