Lord have mercy

quote:

A newborn baby was found dead inside a duffel bag outside of a Chicago fire station early Saturday morning, according to officials.

The grim discovery was made around 5 a.m. on Saturday outside of a station on the 1000 block of North Orleans Street, the Chicago Police Department tells PEOPLE in a statement

The body was found when the firehouse crew went outside that morning to shovel snow, according to The Chicago Tribune. The newspaper also reported that the duffel bag was found covered in snow.

It is not yet clear how long the newborn had been outside.

Fire officials say that there was not an attempt to contact anybody inside the station, an action that could have saved the newborn's life, according to The Chicago Tribune.

does Chicago have one of those drop off the baby, no questions asked policies?

I'm wondering if this policy got this kid killed.

I’m not religious, but I would support a Holy Crusade to wipe out any who would do such to a baby.

What was the temp in Chicago last Saturday night? I’m betting it was below 40 degrees

Chicago is God’s prelude to our decaying society.

Those policies save lives. You're not supposed to just leave the baby out in the snow. There are actual designated spots where you can leave the child.

My company supplies CFD and I have trained some of their personnel at the CFD HQ on the south side, right by Comisky Park (or whatever it is called now, I am not into pro sports). They, like almost all large cities have the "no questions asked drop off" for infants/newborns.

Of course not. As imjustafatkid stated above, you have to have the common sense NOT to just drop the child off in the snow at 3am!

The only solace is that dying this way was probably extremely fast for a newborn. They need nonstop warmth. This is such a horrible story.

somebody will be going to jail for murder. They will be using the Baby's DNA to track down the parents.

That's not how those safe spaces work. It's not like Amazon leaving a box on your front porch lol. They're literal safe, dry, no questions asked drop offs where the baby is almost physically handed over.

Got lost on the Southside one time and stopped a 7-11 to ask directions.

It was like when the bad guy swings into the saloon in western movies.

I did the back stroke out of there.

Is the policy no questions asked even for a botched attempt?

Because if not, this sets up an interesting question of whether or not the mother can be prosecuted.

Assuming that this was a legitimate drop off attempt, and not using that law as a way to kill your kid and get away with it.
