The Perfect Prog Rock Song

Rush - Natural Science
It has it all. Several time changes. Distinct movements within the song. Virtuosic playing on every front. Extremely thoughtful lyrics with subtle metaphors correlating humanity to tiny organisms and our place in the universe. References to fractals.

quote:
When the ebbing tide retreats along the rocky shoreline
It leaves a trail of tide pools in a short-lived galaxy
Each microcosmic planet, a complete society
A simple kind of mirror to reflect upon our own
All the busy little creatures chasing out their destinies
Living in their pools, they soon forget about the sea
Wheel within wheels in a spiral array
A pattern so grand and complex
Time after time we lose sight of the way
Our causes can't see their effects
A quantum leap forward in time and space
The universe learned to expand
Mess and magic, triumphant and tragic
A mechanized world out of hand
Computerized clinic for superior cynics
Who dance to a synthetic band
In their own image their world is fashioned
No wonder they don't understand
Wheel within wheels in a spiral array
A pattern so grand and complex
Time after time we lose sight of the way
Our causes can't see their effects
Science, like nature, must also be tamed
With a view towards its preservation
Given the same state of integrity
It will surely serve us well
Art as expression – Not as market campaigns
Will still capture our imaginations
Given the same state of integrity
It will surely help us along
The most endangered species, the honest man
Will still survive annihilation
Forming a world, a state of integrity
Sensitive, open, and strong
Wave after wave will flow with the tide
And bury the world as it does
Tide after tide will flow and recede
Leaving life to go on as it was

I love the song, but it's basically the least progressive song in the ELP catalog.

Definitely a great submission. Most people really only know First Impression: Part II, which is a damn shame. While I love that "single" pulled from the full piece, it removes most of the dynamism that makes it so great.
Keith Emerson is up there with Rick Wakeman for weirdest stage presence among the prog giants. Which brings me to the next post.

Yes-Yours Is No Disgrace
quote:
Yesterday a morning came, a smile upon your face
Caesar's palace, morning glory, silly human race,
On a sailing ship to nowhere, leaving any place,
If the summer change to winter, yours is no disgrace
Battleships confide in me and tell me where you are,
Shining, flying, purple wolfhound, show me where you are,
Lost in summer, morning, winter, travel very far,
Lost in musing circumstances, that's just where you are
Yesterday a morning came, a smile upon your face
Caesar's palace, morning glory, silly human, silly human race,
On a sailing ship to nowhere, leaving any place,
If the summer change to winter, yours is no,
Yours is no disgrace
Yours is no disgrace
Yours is no disgrace
Death defying, mutilated armies scatter the earth,
Crawling out of dirty holes, their morals,
Their morals disappear
Yesterday a morning came, a smile upon your face
Caesar's palace, morning glory, silly human, silly human, silly human race,
On a sailing ship to nowhere, leaving any place,
If the summer change to winter, yours is no,
Yours is no disgrace
Yours is no disgrace
Yours is no disgrace
Battleships confide in me and tell me where you are,
Shining, flying, purple wolfhound, show me where you are,
Lost in summer, morning, winter, travel very far,
Lost in musing circumstances, that's just where you are

I'm a bigtime prog head though I love all kinds of music. But prog is my favourite. I especially love Gilmour era Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Gabriel era Genesis, Yes, Astra, Porcupine Tree, Nektar, Nosound, and even Zeppelin was pretty prog on things like No Quarter live from the Song Remains the Same or Achilles' Last Stand.
But for one perfect prog song I'd pick:
the Court of the Crimson King - by King Crimson

Obviously Charlie Daniels Band isn’t the first name you think of when you think prog, but this song always amazed me. It really does take you on a ride.

Yes - Close to the Edge
It's long af, loud, quiet, agressive and melodic. Totally Epic.
Marillion - Script for a Jester's Tear
Long song, with several movements. One of my favorites.
Genesis - Supper's Ready
If you asked for the perfect prog album, I would say the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. It is one of the best. But as individual songs go, Supper's Ready is a great one - epic.
