Fear Of A Blank PlanetA European band called Porcupine Tree, relatively unknown in the states but was kind of a big deal across the pond in the late 90s, carry them label as Kings of Prog Rock…so naturally any one of of their 500 songs would have to be considered the best prog song. I randomly chose this one to post today. Tomorrow I would choose another

Porcupine Three.....Colin Edwin is not involved in the new album, unfortunately

That said, I'd go Anesthetize or Voyage 34 over FOABP.

Dream Theatre - A Change of Seasons
Maybe Prog Metal. But one of the most beautifully composed progressive songs ever written. Multiple modes and scale changes. Real music architects.

I don't know if you can really call Pink Floyd progressive. They came from the space rock branch of the tree. Yes they have ethereal sounds and evocative lyrics but the songwriting isn't particularly challenging, which is a hallmark of progressive rock.

Note...that doesn't mean it isn't fantastic, it is. I like to thing of Pink Floyd as in a genre of their own. They're singular. No one sounds like them, and they sound like no-one else. Gilmour/Waters is clearly one of the great teaming in rock music history. We may never see another like it again.

The production values are off the charts. You can hear Alan Parson's touch all over the music.

It's really a shame that "prog" somehow is now a metal genre. Theres really no connection to the earlier generations of progressive music. Progressive music embraced all kinds of musical styles whole heartedly. Folk, Canterbury, Fusion, World, Jazz, even county in some places. It takes a bit more than whizzing through arpeggios in 13/8 to make it progressive...but I guess it is "prog".

For a prog rock extravaganza, check out A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers by Van der Graaf Generator. It has everything a classic prog rock song can possibly have.

Foxtrot, Trespass and Nursery Cryme were great as was Lamb Lies Down. (Their Best)

Genesis were at their best with Gabriel on vocals and Collins behind the drums where he belongs.

I’m with you on Natural Science but I put La Villa Strangiato and Starship Trooper right there with it.
