For Ida I thought about this a lot. I always had access to power. I did not always have access to fuel.
I had access to power because I had fuel.
Same. Hurricane preparation is multi-layered. No one said to get rid of it. We were talking about evacuation though where obtaining fuel and sitting on the road is an issue.

They can just put a solar panel on their car and it will provide more electricity than they know what to do with
they would need the secondary polar panels this time around.

Were there no EVs in that event?

Fire and EMT would rush to save them, only to realize we don’t have enough fire and EMT to save everyone. So the answer would be hire more fire and EMT personnel in case there’s a next time. The entire fire and EMT dept would be equipped with snow buggies and other single use equipment in case there’s a next time. Etc and so forth.

An EV is much more efficient at heating the car because it does not need to maintain the inertia, against running friction, of a giant engine. In short the EV does not need to be "running" only the heater would be. So although I have no experience, I'd guess the EV would last a lot longer than the ICE.

Are we also assuming that people in this storm can’t get out and into other vehicles to save on power consumption?
Sit in my car for a few hours, then we’ll sit in your car for a few hours, etc.

quote:Nah. It's always tough to get fueled up before a storm due to runs at the pumps and shortages, so many vehicles were trying to evacuate with less than a full tank. Many EVs leave the house with a full charge every morning, and especially before a storm owners would charge up.
During hurricane Katrina evacuation there were people stranded on the highways for many hours. When many started running out of gas fuel trucks were sent out on the highways to supply them with gas. Those driving a EV would have been SOL.

The usual retort to this is that people who live in apartments or park on the street are not able to charge. Absolutes are all people understand

That just underscores how incredibly inefficient an ICE vehicle is when a small portion of the energy wasted as heat can heat the cabin even in the coldest temps.
Unless you have strong engineering experience in heat transfer systems and understand thermal flux you should probably just bow out as I can assure you it is not a "small amount". Especially in regions that have real winters to contend with. Unlike you, I have real vehicle datalogs to show how much of an impact running a heater can have on overall ECT during northern winters.

Since you are so confident show your work.

Guy named Bjørn Nyland has a YouTube channel where he does a LOT of EV testing with various cars and scenarios. Lots of road trips, lots of camping, etc. Here are the results from a 2021 Tesla Model 3 in camp mode in below-freezing temps:
I believe he kept the cabin around 65F overnight. He did have heat shields on the windows, not sure how much that helped. He also does real world cold weather range tests on a variety of EVs.
Great channel if you need more data for your logs.

Exactly how do solar panels work during a snow storm and at night?

Wareagle must be heavily leveraged in ExxonMobil stock.

I assume the batteries can power heaters that long and then drive away? Or someone could bring them cans of electricity to pour into the cars if they were running low?
FWIW, Several yrs ago a section of I24 in KY got overwhelmed with a localized snowstorm of about 18-24" in 24 hrs. It closed about 40 miles of the interstate and the National Guard had to go out and rescue a bunch of stranded motorists. The biggest issue was most of these people ran out of gas while their car was stuck from running the engine for heat.
FWIW also I am not a big fan of EV's either. Niece's husband recently bought a Tesla and in a 6 hr drive they had to stop twice to charge at a supercharger facility.

Using LFP batteries that not every Tesla, let alone EV's in general, use. Now show the data for a Tesla older than 2021. Maybe one day you clods will learn to stop cherry picking your data points. Probably around the time Biden becomes not a drooling moron.

Zero chance. It’s like this entire country is simultaneously experiencing a mass psychogenic illness that necessitates them submitting to the Dunning-Kruger Effect in every aspect of their lives. Is what it is.
It’s appropriate that the annual awards for idiots killing themselves in idiotic fashion is named after the man who wrote in his book The Descent of Man, "Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge.”
