Haven’t looked into it too much yet, but wife (no pics) and I are looking at taking a trip to Switzerland next year. Can go in July/August or November. Would spend about a week there, not including travel days. Would love to see the Alps, but don’t want to ski. We don’t mind cold weather or hiking. Like seeing great views and new towns.

Anyone been and have recommendations? Should we go to Geneva, Bern or Zurich or all three? Travel day to Munich or Milan? Summer or Winter? Any must sees/dos?

TIA

I've spent a lot of time in Geneva. It's not really a tourist city, but the location is good for access to lots of cool places like Montreux and the Alps.

If you go to the Geneva and want to see the Alps, I would highly recommend taking the Alpebus to Chamonix and Mont Blanc. The Aiguille du Midi is the most amazing place I've ever been in my life.

We had a great time in Interlaken too. Went Canyoning, which was a blast. Only transited through Zurich and Bern, so not much to add. Had colleagues that loved Lucerne.

Switzerland in general is insanely expensive. Like $20 for a beer expensive in Geneva. Hotels are insane as well. Fair warning.

Interlaken. Take the train to Top of Europe. Then skydive out of a helicopter the next day.

As far as side trips, it’s depends if you rent a car. We had a car and Innsbruck, Austria was a nice stop over on our way to Munich. Lake Lucerne was a good spot to eat and break. The drive was legit.

Perhaps fly into Zurich and fly out of Munich.

Zurich>Interlaken>Innsbruck>Munich…if you are willing to drive.

I have been to Switzerland twice. It may be the most beautiful country on earth.

My favorite major city is Lucerne. I also like Lugano and Interlaken.

You want to experience the Alps but you are not a skier? I will tell you how I viewed the most spectacle scenery I have ever seen in my life. From Zermatt we took the cable car to the top of the Klien Matterhorn, the Little Matterhorn, which is the mountain next to and overlooking the Matterhorn. On the way down we stopped at various levels to enjoy the views. For a time there was a violent blizzard going’s on but when it cleared the scenery was incredible. From one side you can see the Matterhorn. From the other you can see Zermatt off in the distance. All around you you are looking down on the snow covered Alps. Spectacular.

100% recommend the Interlaken area

We made Mürren our home base in July...great views across the valley of the Jungfrau/Monch/Eiger and straight down two vertical miles to Lauterbrunnen. Can cable car up to the Schilthorn or cross over and do the Jungfraujoch train.

Hikes are as mild or grueling as you want to make them.

Hotel Alpina was our spot in Mürren...request a corner room for spectacular views

Loved the Interlaken area. Lauterbrunnen is top 5 in my favorite places I've visited. If Interlaken is looking too expensive, an alternative is to stay in a small, quaint town on the lake called Spiez. It's only a 15 minute train ride from the center of Interlaken and is much cheaper than staying in Interlaken. We enjoyed visiting Thun for half a day also.

Here's Spiez:

I’ve been 2x. Zermatt is absolutely wonderful and is home to the Matterhorn, one of the most photographed mountains in the world. Great hiking in the area. Lausanne on lake Geneva is also a beautiful town. Lots of vineyards in the area. Enjoy your trip.

Just went in November. Stayed three nights in Lucerne and three in Zurich, took the train to Engelberg and then the gondola up to Titlis. The views at the top of the mountain were incredible (it was also the only time in the week we saw the sun).

Lucerne was cool and I saw the surrounding mountains when we arrived but they disappeared within an hour behind clouds and never reappeared. Transportation museum was interesting and a pleasant surprise was Red Bull F1 section (if youre into auto racing) but the museum itself was cool too. Walked along the old city walls and through the old city, good stuff, I imagine the town is incredible in summer, I get why we had good deals, weather was ugly (not horribly cold just foggy/overcast/ugly).

Zurich was pretty cool too, The Swiss National Museum may be my favorite museum Ive ever been to, no exaggeration, considering cost (10 Swiss Francs) amount of exhibits, interactive nature of the exhibits, and overall interest. We also made chocolate molds at Lindt, that was fun too. Again weather was ugly, the last night there it cleared up, and en route to airport next am the sky was clear... literally clear for the first hour in the country and last couple hours (aside from Mt Titlis).

Both Zurich and Lucerne have nice walkable old towns, Ive read Bern is even more impressive but we ran out of time. Mt Titlis for your Alps adventure is highly recommended.

Ive been to Munich twice, both Lucerne and Zurich were more picturesque than Munich.

ive been twice. The first time we flew into Zurich and quickly went to Lauterbrunnen. From there we hiked to some berghauses (family owned inns in the Alps). We went to Geneva at the end of that trip.

The second time I hiked the Tour du Mont Blanc. This was an incredible experience.

Im prone to go straight to the mountains and Switzerland has that in spades. Id go in the summer and head towards Interlaken but specifically go to Lauterbrunnen. Just google some images. Its like Heaven on Earth

Don’t sleep on Lucerne. Day trip to Mount Pilatus, take the cable car to the top for some amazing views, including Lake Lucerne, which has shocking blue waters. See some cows grazing 3/4 of the way up. WTH? There’s a lot to see and experience that’s not slammed with tourists: Old Town, Chapel Bridge, The Lion Monument.

We stayed in a small village a few miles away, in a 100s years old hotel. A top travel memory for me, with my son. It was during the World Cup and Germany was playing. The only small bar in town moved outside on the cobblestone street. Beautiful night, raucous drunks cheering soccer, smoking a Cuban I had picked up in France, drinking German beer.

I've been twice in my life, albeit the last trip was in 1986. May and November actually, so it depends on what you'd want.

It can get very touristy, so time of year is key. Offseason is best if you can target it. The best time to visit Switzerland I would think is in the fall, i.e. maybe around September. The weather is generally pleasant and allows for all activities except winter sports. It's just after the summer high season, so it's no longer crowded.

I will say I thought Lugano Switzerland was one of the prettiest locations I've ever seen. It's in the Italian part of Switzerland, so it has all the ambiance of Italy but with Swiss efficiency and cleanliness.

This is totally random, but my screen saver just brought up pictures of Lavertezzo! Haven't been, but it just jumped up the bucket list!
