An NFT is a non-fungible token. Think of it as a currency, like a gift card, that is only usable at a certain place and isn't exchangeable for cash except at the point of sale for the business issuing it.
Think of it like buying tokens at the arcade. You put real money in the machine and it gives you tokens which you spend on the games in the arcade which only take tokens. It's like that, but on a massive, sinister scale.
See, Facebook and instagram (both under the parent company "Meta") largely replaced the newspaper and the tv station as being places where people first see news and hear about products and services. Meta is attempting to leverage its user data into not just being a platform for advertising but becoming a major sales portal as well to rival Amazon.
The idea is to force users to do transactions through NFT's whose value is controlled by Meta by capturing so much market share that consumers will have no choice.
All of these tech companies are working together on some seriously bad New World Order/Great Reset/Build Back Better bullshite that is going to f&%k everyone.

Like it or not … it is coming
IMO ( and believe me I struggled trying to understand it and this is the best I can do)
Three key aspects
VR: game rooms and worlds to visits…. Think of tron …or games of today on steroids… everyone is an avatar and interacts socially on their game system …their is a commercial on tv making fun of this….
Augmented reality…people meet for business etc in common (zoom conference rooms) or you see things projected into your real situation via glasses…like the cartoon things people were chasing on their iPhone around town…think of Ralph wrecks the internet and your avatar is Ralph
Currency and ownership : you will want stuff for your avatar… and can project an entire different person in there… you can be a stud in there and still be living in your moms basement… but you do not care cause that becomes your world …
Finance:
You need a common global currency(the dollar in our world or Bitcoin in mv)…different countries will have different currencies (like it…Mexico etc)….so different crypto coins… Thus crypto currency’s and exchange…someone need a to build an sp exchange and global bank… this would be defi which is being worked on and hard… stable coins transcend from mv to the real world…
I hope to be dead when this takes over…good luck…

It is the evolution of the internet. It is its own virtual world, but it will eventually be a lot more mainstream. Instead of going to a website, in this virtual world you can go to let's say.... Nike's virtual store to shop and I assume at some point it will allow you to interact with someone who "works there".
If I wanted to go to tigerdroppings, there will we a place to go into and everyone in there will have an avatar and can interact with one another.
