Just moved to a new city and am renting an apartment for the next year while settling in.
Not gonna lie, it is nice to not have to worry about maintenance and yard work. My weekends are wayyyy more free these days.
Shame there is a stigma attached to this type of lifestyle.

Same here. Bought our house in August of 2020. Waterfront home for right at $100/sqft. Everything on the market in this neighborhood right now are listed around $170/sqft

Is that a lot? Legit question. That price is a down payment where I live.

Houses in Chalmette going for over $300,000 does feel like Caesar crossing the Rubicon, I guess. But these are just nominal prices. There's no inherently appropriate or inappropriate level for them, other than "it's probably going to cost more in a year, not less."
Anything that goes beyond that (e.g. "no house in Chalmette could ever be worth such-and-such!") is just fallacious.

Zillow shows that my home has gone down in value. 7 years old now...300k for a new home in Covington.
2200 square feet and with a water view (3 acre pond). Lot is 75 x 125
I don’t get it.

Because Zillow, Trulia, and other online Real Estate sites have almost never had a cogent valuation model. They all suck. Make fun of realtors all you want- these online models of valuation are not reality. Real Estate is house specific, as well as block and neighborhood specific. Works great for a new subdivision with the same builder, anything else is a crapshoot.

Zillow shows my house value has increased by $75K in the last 30 days.

I dont think there is a stigma attached to renting.. maybe on this board lol, but who cares.
Same situation with me, im renting in a new city after selling my NOLA house.. partly to get comfortable with different areas and figure out where exactly i want to live, but mainly to let the market cool off before i get back in (which i think it will in 2022 and 2023).. and yes, for anyone like myself who has had their A/C break in July and throw $8k on the credit card, knowing that all i have to do is make a phone call and they are legally required to fix it for free, is absolutely golden.

House prices are insane. The housing market is pretty much the reason we have crypto (if you look at the reason bitcoin was started).
Its a banker's game. All the conspiracy theory people on here who think the government is out to get them, etc.. And can't see the truth right in front of their face. The people "out to get you" are any industries in which expectations of what you are supposed to have is set for you.
You have to have a certain type of house, you have to drive a certain vehicle. The wife has to have a certain SUV that us of certain standards, the husband has to have a truck that's of certain standards, but you have to buy a house of certain standards first because it has to be able to fit all of the the shite you have that you don't need in it.

The 12 lots, just across Manchac in Ascension on the old horse farm at 73 and Oakland Dr, start at $300,000.
Property values in desired areas near big cities always blows my mind. I could never live in that rat race nor bring myself to pay those prices. I payed $245,000 for 130 acres in 2017 and to think that won’t buy a 2 acres lot in many neighborhoods

No covered parking is an instant no on any house.

I just got a call from a neighbor to tell me that a POS tear down a few houses from me just sold for $590,000. I checked the transfers and it's true. It's a bigger lot 75' x 100'.. Al Copland Jr. bought it.. There is no way it is worth that... Something fishey is going on.. But thanks a-hole for making my property tax go up....
This is in Bucktown..

I’ve been looking in Arabi. The prices are pretty unbelievable, but they haven’t scared us away yet.
