My son is getting heavy into duck hunting and I want to get him a nice semi-auto for his graduation present. Currently he's using my 870 Xpress. Any recs on a good reliable semi-auto 12 ga? He wants an A5 but I don't think they making them anymore. Also, any recs on where to purchase? I'm in the Lafourche/Terrebonne area. I don't mind buying online or travelling a couple hours to get it.

i have had the new A5, SBE3 and A400.

To each their own and everyone shoulders a gun just a little different. I kept the A5 sold d SBE3 due to me not wanting 2 inertia guns and I hunt probably 99% of time with the berretta due to the fact that it does not jam ever no matter what shell runs through it.

I prefer Benelli. I like lighter guns for hunting. If I was buying a gun right now to be my one shotgun for bird hunting, I would buy a 20 gauge Benelli Ethos Cordoba BEST. With modern shells, 20ga is basically just as good as 12 for most people (unless you shoot a ton of geese). I just light light and slim guns. Berettas are heavier and thicker but cycle everything and have less recoil. I've never liked the A5.

Browning revamped the A5 few years ago. It's using the same action as the original Benelli SBE. Its a good gun. If that's what he wants and you're willing to buy it don't hesitate getting it, if you can find it.

I have a Winchester SX4 3.5" that I love. You can get for just under $1000 in assorted Camo. If you want to spend $1450 get him an A400.

I don't do a lot of wing shooting but If I did I would have an A400. The SX4 does just fine for me for the amount of hunting I do.

Great graduation gift. Look on gunbroker, find the exact A5 he wants, ship it to local FFL, he’ll remember it always.

I like the way Berettas shoot but I own both old, new, japanese and Belgium A5s including the revamped one. It's a great gun to be sure.

Reeds has a synthetic black A5 in stock. $1500

I’ve seen them carry a walnut version as well as a real tree version.

I love my maxus as well

I’ve actually shot my cz usa g2 all terrain 20g sxs more than anything this year.

With the advancement of ammo. 20 g is all you need.
I may be getting a 20g franchi affinity soon.

One thing you don’t want is the new A5.
It’s a great gun, don’t get me wrong. But, completely different design than the original. The original was gas operated and could be adjusted for heavy loads. The new A5 is inertia operated. Great for sporting clays or upland game. But you put a 3” mag shell in it and it will knock your fillings out.
There are several soft shooting semi autos on the market. Keep in mind, they don’t all work the same way and the operating system has a huge impact on recoil.
