Snake in my water heater

Last night the craziest thing happened. I opened my laundry room door to let my dogs out. There was a snake on the outside door knob , so when I opened the door it feel into my laundry room and went a hid under the water heater. We were able identify it as non poisonous. (Most likely a rat snake out) then it found an opening in the water heater and proceeded to go into the opening and it is now inside my water heater
Any suggestions on how to get a snake out of a water heater? (Burning down the house or moving are not options)

Id turn off power to the water heater so the snake doesnt short it out and start to burn. Smell could be bad.

Burning down the house
Pretty much your best option. Just think about the future savings in your heating and energy costs.

Let some mice go in the laundry room.

If you turn it off and the room is cold, it might leave on its own. It is probably in the heater for warmth.

I'd seal that bitch in the water heater, trap him, disconnect water heater and burn it. buy new water heater.

So this is an external door?
If so, leave it open and let it out.

He'll leave when he gets hungry.

How is there an opening to actually get in the water heater?

Put several sticky traps around the bottom of the water heater where he went in at and you will catch him

The OP didn't say it was an electric water heater, and even if it was, the power is likely coming in at the top of the heater going to the heating elements inside the tank.
If a gas water heater, there is nothing electric to it.
The most it could do is get into the tank insulation between the outer housing and the internal tank, but it won't stay there once it gets hungry-----which may take several days if it just ate and is comfortable where it is.

I remember reading about a guy in Mississippi that had a similar issue a few years ago.
His snake turned out to be timber rattlesnake!

You put your hot water heater in a snake’s habitat and are now complaining about it. No telling how many others you have displaced. Congrats on the impending rat infestation

Add seasoning to taste and boil fo5 15 mins, then simmer for 5.

Not sure but the metal on the outside just covers the insulation that’s around the internal tank. I guess it could get into the lower thermostat and cause some issues assuming you have a standard type water heater. Personally I’d kill the power disconnect it assuming it’s easy to move and take it outside and see if you can get him to come out.

Well, that's not good. I ran into a few of them years ago out in N.O. East when hitting some of the remote canals behind Village De' Lest off Michoud Blvd.
Between them, cottonmouths, copperheads and the non-venomous water snakes, they kept me on my toes exploring that area.

Disconnecting, draining, moving, reinstalling a water heater because of a rat snake? He’ll come out on his own shortly. Snakes just do snake things. He’s not going to make a nest in there like a rat and camp out for a year
