Next Goal Wins - Taika Waititi's New Flick

Had my brother in laws in for the weekend (age 14 and 18) so me and Mrs. Iwy took them to go see it. Love me some Jojo Rabbit and Hunt For the Wilderpeople so I figured this migt be a decent one.
The IMDB movie description is pretty misleading:
"The story of the infamously terrible American Samoa soccer team, known for a brutal 2001 FIFA match they lost 31-0."
Description should have read:
"Story about the first openly transgender soccer layer to play in a world cup qualifier."
Was pretty disappointed that that was arguably the main story line and that the trailer (only one I watched) had no mention of that part of the story. It actually only shows him/her in the trailer for 1/2 a second and you obviously wouldn't even know it was a trans from that.

Right. The 14 year old leaned over two me and said "can we go if this is all this going to be about?" Actually kind of disappointed I didn't walk out. Straight up duped you into buying the ticket.
Not really spoiling much but one of the "heartwarming" moments was the coach having to calm the trans player down from the mental breakdown it was having from not taking it's hormone pills. Dead serious

"Boy", which I believe was his first major film, is great as well. His collapse as a filmmaker has been really disappointing.

Jesus H... I was planning on taking my son to see this movie since he's a soccer fan. Thanks for the heads up. Absolutely never would've guessed based on the description and trailer.

i'm mildly convinced that his role in Free Guy was autobiographical as opposed to fictional at this point.
i'm not opposed to interjecting real life into these stories but the trans person was such a minor role (a single assist) in a minute match, that their inclusion is overblown.
Taika overplayed his hand.
ETA: this is also a man transitioning to a woman as opposed to a woman competing with men. that less impressive than a female kicker making a FG in CFB to me.

I'll always be a fan because of what we do in the shadows and thor ragnarok. Plus I've seen a lot bitching about trans and gay stuff on here that didn't bother me. The fall of house usher comes to mind i thought that was a great series.

Watiti went all in on gay and trans stuff the last few years. What’s crazy is 10 years ago he was making fun of the way trans guys like Jenner looked like in makeup. It’s like someone wrote him a fat check to fully embrace.

The movie bombed horribly if it makes you feel any better. Like others have said, Waititi's stock is at an all time low right now.
