Discovery is going to run HBO into the ground isn't it?

Just saw where Winning Time (HBO series on the Lakers) has been shutdown after just two seasons.

In the process of reading about that, I saw it mentioned that Discovery considered ending Righteous Gemstones as well but they made the cut (God bless, Baby Billy). So I imagine they're operating on thin ice, which is super unfortunate since it's arguably one of the funniest shows on TV right now.

And the Max app is a clusterfrick of shows that Discovery is trying to promote on the same level as HBO shows. And while I do appreciate the addition of AMC+, the rest is just terrible.

How long does HBO have at this point?

Why pay for that when a Sister Wives spinoff is just as good?

I give it about 5 years until it’s all reality and trash shows.

I can’t see them green lighting shows like The Wire, GoT, True Detective, etc. under Discovery.

I hope I’m wrong.

This really disappointed me. I was into the series.

I think HBO is going to struggle, especially when it doesn't have a major draw franchise. And that's the case right now.

I find it pretty hard to justify MAX at this point. The movie selection is pretty weak, and that's always been a focal point. I think Apple might have the highest hit rate for tier one series right now.

Well and Drizz has a good point, what is the likelihood that they approve quality series going forward if their only concern is quantity over quality.

I know The Gilded Age is coming up with its new season soon and it should be good, but I could just as easily see the twat in charge at Discovery/WB canning it because of production costs and the thought that some stupid reality show could replace it.

Zaslav has been terrible, but I have no doubt he's just getting ready to sell it all in the near future

I get MAX for free with ATT fiber, but I'm all about the decades of top tier original series. If I were to put a list together of my top 25 favorite shows of all time, probably 15 are HBO originals, and MAX has a few random non HBO series that are on that list (The Knick is the first one that comes to mind). I'm perfectly fine re-watching shows that I love, so MAX will always have content for me. At least until the start removing too many shows that I enjoy (RIP Life's Too Short).

I'm canceling my Max subscription. This is ridiculous.

Gilded Age, last of us, and HoD are the only things of interest and i have no idea when they're returning.

i know people like winning time, righteous gemstones, sucession, etc. but there's been no "night of" "big little lies" "undoing" "mare of easttown" or "true detective" type shows that drew me in for a while now.

Not arguing that Discovery might run MAX into the ground but the ratings had really dropped and this season overall was much worse than season one. Add the writers strike into the mix, I can see why this was cancelled.

But it looks like the days of them stretching shows out and giving them another go to see if the show turns it around is over with. Perry Mason as cancelled despite having good reviews. They decided not to fork out a good chunk of change on Westworld even though it would have given the show a true ending. The Nevers, Raised by Wolves. The Idol (never watched it), all gone.

That used to be the one streaming service where most of the stuff it recommended I would go "yea, I'll give that a shot." Now it recommends reality shows and the magnolia network type stuff.

Really disappointing because it was hands down the best streaming service for a while for me. Probably still is just based on past shows, but Discovery has not been a good thing.

I just noticed yesterday they added Pump Up The Volume, so I'll be keeping the app for a while to watch that a dozen or so times again

I think it was 4-5 years ago where they got a new programming head and the guy explicitly said he wanted to copy the Netflix/Hulu model, so just pump out a shitload of content vs make anything culturally relevant.

I remember looking through the HBO library maybe a year or two ago and thinking what the frick, no one has heard of 80% of these. It was already bad pre merger, and now the brand is practically dead.

Not just HBO. They are going to trash all of Warner Bros. They have laid off so many production finance and physical production staff in Burbank that the studio can barely function.

why did they shut it down? I was really starting to get into it as well. Love the nostalgic feel of the entire short series
