Who is watching? I am sure this is going to be a lightning rod for attention from every direction which is what I am sure they're hoping for with this project.

1619 Project - Hulu Press Release

Hulu’s six-part 1619 Docuseries is an expansion of “The 1619 Project” created by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones and the New York Times Magazine. The series seeks to reframe the country’s history by placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of Black Americans at the very center of our national narrative

I prefer fantasy with elves and dragons if I'm going to bother with it.

Was stuck watching broadcast TV the other day and ads came on for this shite being broadcast on ABC and Hulu.

If I wanted to watch a bunch of self serving “white sucks!” bullshite, there’s a lot of other stuff to choose from which is likely better written.

I found this interesting:

Viewing Guide for the classroom

Episode 6: Justice

“Justice” examines the systemic causes of the lasting Racial Wealth Gap between Black and white Americans and presents solutions for how the harm caused by those unjust systems and policies can be repaired. It explores the case for reparations for Black Americans through historical analysis, presentation of relevant data, and the personal accounts of Black American families and communities.

Themes in this episode include:

Historic Fights for Reparations

Understanding The Racial Wealth Gap

Some of the history and personal stories told in this episode are hard to listen to because they describe violence and painful events. We suggest having a classroom social-emotional learning protocol for engaging with hard histories and inviting students to think through how they can care for themselves when things are both important to know and difficult to listen to.

Some questions to consider before viewing:

1. What is reparation? Why do people expect a repair for harm?

2. What is justice? How have you heard it defined? What is the relationship between justice and reparation?

3. Some of the history and personal stories told in this episode are hard to listen to because they describe painful events. What can we do to take care of ourselves when something is both important to hear and difficult to listen to?

Will they acknowledge this inconvenient fact:
quote:

Anthony Johnson (c. 1600 – 1670) was an African American man born in Angola who achieved wealth in the early 17th-century Colony of Virginia. He is most known for the fact that he was the first person to own a slave as recognized by the Virginia courts.

Why do you think history is anything but reconstruction? History is constantly in flux.

On the bright side it won't be quite as historically inaccurate as Cleopatra

It’s an interesting concept if done right and not patronizing. It’s probably not gonna be done right…

Fundamentally the wrong questions IMO. The right questions are why there are such significant wealth and achievement gaps between African Americans from Nigeria, the West Indes, etc from the people who were descended from the American southern slave populations. Or why darkly pigmented immigrants from India and Pakistan vastly out earn other groups.

Bonus points for actually discussing the populations affected by red lining disproportionately affected blacks but numerically affected far more whites.

Or making the point that reparations have already been done many times over through great society programs but the programs were no more successful in building wealth than COVID stimulus money. The recipients (black, white, Native American, and other) have not been enriched by government money. They have been stripped of their self esteem and sense of dignity or agency.

The bigotry of low expectations is not a soft bigotry. It is the deepest and most debilitating possible treatment of any group. It assumes the inferiority and the inability of a group to achieve or compete.

Does it mention that LBJ destroyed the black family unit in this country? The same could also be said about poor people in general when it came to that POS but that SOB set the African American community back in this country. Take the father’s out of homes in hopes of government money and you get what’s currently happening in this country.
