I guess it’s just too much to ask in some places that they just teach your kid reading, writing, math, U.S. and World History, etc.

There’s a major difference: When this stuff is being spewed at a public school that a kid has to attend if they’re going to attend public school, the parent doesn’t get the final say in what their kid is exposed to. When it comes to church, whether a kid goes to church and what church they attend is totally at the discretion of their parent/guardian.
