I personally think this is a total waste of money. It's a cool project but I do not see how this project will help out with traffic.

They claim it's to build 3,000 "Affordable" (which won't be affordable) Housing Units. There is plenty of land around Atlanta to build 3,000 "Affordable" Housing Units.

Then, they say it's to create "Green Space" - Atlanta has the most Green Space out of any major city in the United States... so they want to waste billions of dollars to create more Green Space that the city doesn't really need?

No doubt it's a cool project, but I just cannot see this helping Atlanta traffic. Can you imagine the nightmare and pure hell the traffic will be for YEARS while they are buildng and contructing this dumb project?

Capping Downtown Atlanta Highway

If there was any doubt where Atlanta’s 61st mayor stands on whether downtown’s highway-capping park concept is a sound use of energy and resources, that should be erased now.

In a new promo video for the Stitch project, narrator Mayor Andre Dickens forecasts that “soon, empty [downtown] parking lots and underutilized properties will be transformed into a vibrant and diverse community … that’s due in large part to the funding and support provided by the Inflation Reduction Act and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.”

The one-minute and 50-second video was shared with government leaders from across the U.S. during National Infrastructure Week in Washington, D.C., which began May 15, according to Central Atlanta Progress.

Dickens nods to support from the Biden Administration, along with early funding for Stitch planning secured by Georgia legislators Nikema Williams, Raphael Warnock, and Jon Ossoff.

The video includes eye-popping statistical projections for what the 3/4th-mile highway-capping greenspace is expected to generate, according to Dickens: roughly 3,000 new affordable housing units and 13,000 jobs. The park would also be infused with $3 billion in private developer investments, according to the promo.

Dickens describes the 14-acre Stitch as “a once-in-a-generation project” that would link people with multiple transportation modes.

“Atlanta is on the cusp of something great,” says the mayor. “As we grow, it remains more important than ever to continue bringing our communities together. Despite its name, the Connector cuts our city center into two, separating Atlantans from essential opportunities and each other… Now is the time for change.”

The person doing the render really missed a great opportunity to drop in someone wearing a Falcons Super Bowl 51 Champions shirt.

Ambitious to say the least but I don't have a problem w/this, it might be a prototype for other cities if we can pull this off.

This is true. Atlanta is called "The City In The Forest" for a reason.

Interesting. I've always called it "Black People in the Woods."

Actually the population of Atlanta proper has gentrified greatly the last 15 years. The black population actually makes.up less than 50% of the total population. It's at 46%, it was as high as 67% I'm 1990. The Hispanic population inside the city is growing, also.

As someone that is a taxpayer and have driven through ATL many times on 85/75 I have a few thoughts on this.

Looking at the idea of this project I do not have strong feelings either way; maybe it will be nice, maybe it will be a mess. If the people of Atlanta want it good for them. I do wonder if the safety/risk aspects of this design have been thought through and addressed (does anyone remember a few years ago when a section of 85/75 was so damaged by a fire underneath that it fell in…)

What I find despicable is the brazen use of federal tax dollars from the so-called “Inflation Reduction Act” to fund this project. What the hell does putting a green space cap on 85/75 over a multi-year period have to do with Inflation Reduction in 2023…?!?!?!? The mayor has the audacity to brag about getting the money from this source as if it is something to be proud of…., but he is far from an outlier as politicians everywhere are trying to get their snouts into the trough of federal money that this Democratic administration has bled from taxpayers. This part is disgusting to me.

Yeah the first thing of is all the wrecks and eventually wrecks with fire in what is essentially a mile long tunnel.

That said, I accept the challenge to hold my breath through the entire tunnel, especially during rush hour.

I’m 51 years old. This won’t be finished when I’m 80.

That mayor pimped every Democrat he could think of for this project.

That was the fire underneath the Lindbergh Viaduct on 85 that a homeless guy started when he tried to burn electrical wire.

It almost seems like A Battery(where the Braves play) but on a smaller, urban scale.
