Pretty good (TLDR)read on the budget issues at West Virginia University. The school’s deficit keeps getting bigger while enrollment keeps getting smaller, and they’ve yet to reach the demographic cliff, where fewer kids will be ready and available to go to college to keep the hampster wheel rolling.

Cut the bottom five degrees and programs yearly until the budget balances.
Not that hard.
Not that hard.

I think the traditional university model is dying and needs to die.
Spending a shite ton of money to live near/on a campus for 4 years doing a bunch of weird shite isn't cost-effective anymore.
College is too expensive for universities to waste so much money on ridiculous departments and courses.
It doesn't matter what the younger generations want, there isn't going to be enough money in the world to accommodate them. Emotional support centers, this service, or that, it all costs a pretty penny and 98% of the student body is paying thousands a semester for services they'll never use.

They need the kids. Why would they be cutting anything?

Seems like a good introduction to what being a contributor is like in today's society.

Colleges need to move online. Cut 90% of costs, sell buildings, save taxpayers billions a year.

This works for everything that doesn’t require labs, which are generally in demand roles. Nurses, engineers, etc. those jobs are what we should be promoting.

The number of kids enrolled in business, education and engineering is large and those programs are profitable.
The number of kids majoring in ballet, ceramics and Ancient Greek literature is small and losing money. Cut the five least profitable programs a year until the budget balances.
A kid can still major in ballet, just not at WV.

frick colleges and universities. They have been gouging the public and government for years while failing to fulfill the critical role they are supposed to play to our society.
College is no longer preparing kids for the for the jobs they will face or for the basic realities of the real world.
We could use a 50% reduction in higher learning institutions IMHO.

I agree with you, but this is the opposite of what universities are doing. They are building recreational centers, luxury dorms and offering fashionable but worthless courses of study. The raising tuition and relying on government support and money from student loans. Very few benefit from this.

They could also improve their accounting department.

WVU is too large for how small the state is. The last decade or two the school started focusing heavily on out of state students. They went to neighboring states and would do on the spot admissions at HS. WVU became a place for kids from VA, MD, PA who didn’t get into decent state schools and didn’t want to go to community college. Idaho, NH, Maine, Montana, and Vermont are all comparable states and their flagship universities have half the enrollment of WVU. WVU doesn’t need to focus on sports nearly as much as it does either with the lack of in state talent that they have.

Lots of friends and family who went there. That’s tragic.
ETA: it’s like Alabama. >50% OOS.
In my time visiting there. I maybe met 1-2 kids from WV. most were from Maryland and New Jersey and NOVA.

I don’t know what kind of curriculum schools should offer, but I think you’re looking at it all wrong. First, the excess in redundant positions w/in administration should be cut. Then cut the crap that’s obviously not working. They pay 150,000 a year for degreeworks and still cannot keep up with who is graduating. Then they need to re-examine their model which includes curriculum. They are issuing a lot of debt though- selling the future, but the early results are pointing toward bankruptcy.
As for your plan-
Yes engineering should be fine, and universities should pour money into their top programs as always. But even business subsets such as office administration are risky considering AI. I wouldn’t cut programs based on anything other than demand though.
