And how'd that dynamic change as the war progressed after Midway?

The US I believe. The embargo on selling them oil is what forced them to attack and declare war on us

oil baws don’t get enough credit for aiding the war effort. Pretty much all of the Allies oil and refined products came from the US.

related tidbit, by the end the japs we’re using unrefined oil as fuel. Straight from the ground into the boilers

Oh boy. Don't ask this question. You will anger the FDR fanboys.

Not only that, the fuel coming out of the US was higher octane than what the Axis had, which made a huge difference in performance when it came to aircraft.

I was under the impression that the US embargoed them and that’s why they attacked Pearl. And they had to get oil from the China area, that’s why they occupied China.

South China Sea was one of the "4 spheres" of oil
#1 Americas's - North and South
#2 Russia - gobs of oil but self consumer
#3 South China Seas - Asia (via Royal Dutch Shell and others)
#4 Middle East / Africa - former Persian Empire
Most of the African / Middle Eastern oil has historically been for European consumption which is why the Americans and English recognized the Bedouin's over the Persian Empire to get the oil franchises there. If memory serves, it was one of the reasons Italy invaded Africa and why the early German battles were in North Africa.
Pretty sure Germany, Italy, and Japan have no native oil resources and while the UK had 500+ years of coal, Churchill knew a coal navy was no match for an oil navy.

Dutch East Indies was a prize. Before that the United States fueled the Jap war machine.

That's my understanding. The US oil spigot was turned off which ostensibly incited the Japs to attack Pearl Harbor.
What I'm asking is that after we turned their supply off where did they get oil then?

Oil was a driving factor in Japan’s decision to go to war with the US. Before WWII, Japan got the vast majority of their oil from the US. Once FDR announced the oil embargo against Japan in July 1941, Japan was faced with two choices:
1. Submit to US demands to halt the war in China
2. Get oil from somewhere else, namely the Dutch East Indies
Japan chose option 2. But for that option to work, Japan had to first neutralize the US Pacific Fleet, US forces in the Philippines, and neutralize British forces in Hong Kong and Singapore. And they’d have to do all this while also seizing the oil fields of the Dutch East Indies. And on top of that, as of July 1941, they had roughly six months to do it because that how long their stocks of oil would last before the Combined Fleet would be left unable to operate due to lack of oil. This was the nexus of the attacks of December 7, 1941. Japan’s overarching goal was the oil fields in the Dutch East Indies. That’s where most of Japan’s oil came from during WWII.

There is a picture aboard the Missouri, that shows a kamikaze plane, that hit the ship. The plane was on the deck and the sailors were point at the tires.
It said Goodyear.

Java and the Dutch East Indies were the source of oil.
The US submarine forces did more to win the Pacific war than any other branch of service. By the end of the war there wasn’t much bigger than a sampan moving in the Sea of Japan or South China Sea. The bubbleheads almost completely obliterated the Japs’ merchant forces.
