The suicide rate in the United States returned to a near-record high in 2021, reversing two years of decline, according to a report released Thursday by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Final data for the year shows that suicide was the 11th leading cause of death nationwide, with more than 14 deaths for every 100,000 people. The death rate has increased 32% over the past two decades, and the 4% jump between 2020 and 2021 was the sharpest annual increase in that timeframe.

The suicide death rate was four times higher among men than women in 2021, CDC data shows, as it has been in many years prior. Rates increased significantly for men of most ages between 2020 and 2021 but were relatively unchanged for women of most ages, except for a significant rise among those 75 and older.

Rates were highest among American Indian people – about twice as high as average for men and three times as high for women – and rates spiked about 17% between 2020 and 2021. Rates also increased significantly for Black and White men and women.

Another report published Thursday by the CDC shows that adolescents were the age group most likely to visit the emergency department for suicidal thoughts in recent years.

More nihilism, less reason to live for many as we have moved away from God.

Isolation and lost hope caused by the China virus overreaction. But think of all the lives we saved.

As more and more people reject God and His plan for how we should live and instead embrace the prevailing secular mindset that is obsessed with increasingly perverted homosexual sexual fetishes, narcissistic self-worship, and a life spent in pursuit of empty and meaningless titillation of our most base animalistic desires to distract from the hopelessness of having no actual purpose in life, the higher the suicide rate will climb.

the flip from female to male suicidal hospital visits after the age 25 is interesting

is that mostly driven by veterans? or does the mid life crisis hit men that hard?

PTSD has to be a major factor. I'd imagine the way most men get worked over in divorce might be part of that as well.

If it's white males, then I'd lay that on wokeness, that half of society is blaming everything from slavery to climate change on this group.

But growing demand for services is matched with a nationwide shortage of beds for children who need mental health help, leaving many children waiting in emergency department beds and crowding hospitals.

And no one is doing anything about it.

Politicians on both sides of the aisle are too busy slinging dirt and fighting their petty personal wars between each other while we suffer. Federal and state.

Myself and other local therapist/psychs worked with a local politician (who is a psych herself) to form legislation to begin opening more inpatient facilities and it never even made it out of committee.

Maybe shutting down our country wasn’t such a smart idea after all. I am sure that addiction is up substantially as well. Bankruptcies are up. Divorce is up.

This country will be paying for the sins of really stupid decisions for a long time.

Just a thought, I don’t see very many young men in therapy compared to female clients so it may be a reluctance to receive treatment until they’re to the point of an actual attempt or they never get treatment at all. That age group is also when you typically see more “psychotic breaks” and emergence of more severe disorders.

It’s also worth noting, men tend to select more fatal means when attempting (like firearm, hanging) so they almost always statistically have a higher number of actual suicides versus attempts to women who utilize means that may not be as fatal (like pills, cutting).

What did they think would happen when you force businesses to close and people lose hope, jobs, and entertainment? Mass depression and hopelessness.
