It’s a common sight on the streets of cities across Louisiana in the days after parades roll during Carnival season: beads stuck in trees, plastic cups lining streets, and bits of purple, green and gold revelry scattered about.

Parade organizers could be required to clean up all this litter within 24 hours of an event if a proposed Louisiana law receives support. But the proposal is being viewed negatively by some Mardi Gras krewes around the state who say it could have far-reaching, unintended consequences.

State Rep. Foy Bryan Gadberry, R-West Monroe, wrote the bill at the request of a recycling nonprofit, Ouachita Green. He prefiled the bill Feb. 9. While admittedly Mardi Gras celebrations in the northern part of the state are a bit more subdued, Gadberry still believes everyone would benefit if local governments had more muscle behind their cleanup efforts.

Doesn't see fair to me. That's the cost of doing business for the city.

Would the cities prefer no parades? What's the financial windfall to the cities of tourists coming in for Mardi Gras versus the cost of cleanup?

If it's a hassle and not worth it, fine. Otherwise, bite the bullet and spend some money in order to generate WAY more.

Most parades don’t bring in massive tourism. Mardi Gras does. That’s why it’s distinct

The city wants the tax revenue mardi gras tourists bring but none of the cost

Sounds like a good idea. Just give krewes a cut of the hotel taxes the state collects for hotels within 2 miles of the parade route.

Sounds like a problem that should be solved by local municipalities not the state.

I left Nola forever last summer but i was paying $1000 a month in property taxes and there are no schools, roads, infrastructure, etc…. But at least the city picked up Mardi Gras trash efficiently

Krewes: We’ll just drink and stare at the peasants instead of throwing trinkets to them

That would more or less kill what's left of Mardi Gras, imo. Krewes would begin to evaporate at a faster rate than ever. Louisiana would deliberately do things to kill its' cash cows.

Because the city is collecting taxes and all sorts of other benefits from the tourism that comes for the parades.

God some of these people are such drooling morons.

Got to disagree with you on this one scruffy. This is a TERRIBLE idea.

And the city is supposed to be cleaning the streets anyway. When a storm comes through should they refuse to clean that up?

The cost of doing something the city should be doing anyway versus the HUGE benefits they reap...this is more government greed that will eventually kill the golden goose

ETA And why the frick should some goober from WEST MONROE have any say over what happens at Mardi Gras?

This. If it’s a burden that’s one thing. If it’s an annoyance like paying for car tires? frick off. Pay or walk everywhere or in the city cases don’t have parades.

If the city had to pay the cops to provide security, and they also have to pay to clean up the streets; then how will they be able to pay for all the bureaucrats, the midnight basketball, and all those economic zones?
