Question about buying LEGO

I’m wanting to get some for my kids and haven’t had any since I was younger. Do they only come in themed sets? Do they not sell something like a big box of various colored bricks to just build whatever you want? Closest thing I could find was the LEGO classic box. Thanks I’m a noob at this

They sell it and it's cheaper than the themes. Got a box half price for my kid the other day. I will link it. THe one I'm linking was $25 the other day. On another note I saw a themed kit that was an 8 bit nintendo with an old console TV. One of the coolest Lego sets I've seen.

They have big boxes of regular Lego at most stores. I’ve seen them at Target & Walmart recently. The box looks kind of like a rainbow (not in a pride way).

Check online markeplaces... people always selling boxes of Lego pieces and sometimes you can find good deals.
Also, 2nd and Charles has a Lego bin where you can buy them by weight.

The architecture sets are cool, too. My older kid has most of them. She’s getting the Great Pyramid & a cool Lego Starry Night set for Christmas.

I lucked up and found some great sets at garage sales for the nephew years ago. Threw 'em in a bowl of soapy water. They have gotten crazy expensive for little pieces of plastic. Buy the lego tool thing sep, sometimes it comes in handy.

Be careful buying expensive sets

You can buy a classic box...
Lego city is the bomb sets.
The documentary on LEGO is cool to watch and the tooling it takes to cut these bricks to where every lego will snap together with any other lego made.
Fake lego sets off ebay are cool. Especially the military ones. They aren't perfect and the instructions are rough. Get you some super glue and glue them together and they can play with them without them falling apart. I have some ww2 and desert marine sets with a blackhawk for the boys.

This will at least give you an idea on all the boxes of Lego Classic available. There are several "themed" like space mission etc as well. Check Walmart, Target, and Best Buy online for some pretty decent deals along with Amazon.
Lego City sets are also great.

I also like the Speed Champion sets and the car sets like the classic Mini Cooper. I've been getting the Lego City Advent calendar sets the past few years.

Is this your house?
You can buy the themed sets like you remember, “city,” “space,” etc. you can also buy licensed sets like Disney, marvel, Harry Potter, and you can get sets that are aimed at adults or older kids like the architecture sets.
You can still get the non-themed sets in two different flavors. Theres the “classic” sets that are just a box of bricks and There’s what’s called “creator” which is sort of the same thing but with some guided ideas to build different things.
The classic sets are the best value.

We bought the Nintendo one for the 15 year old last Christmas
