Take a look at this kid in this photo of JFK

So I come across this story about lost images from Life Magazine ... and here's one of JFK on the campaign trail in 1960. Take a look at the kid in the lower right. Is he pointing a gun at his own mouth? I tried to enlarge and it still looks that way to me. I tried googling "kid points gun at mouth during JFK speech" and got nothing.
What says the OT? Am I seeing things? There's another kid glancing at him.

Cap pistol. Back before everyone became pussies they looked almost indistinguishable from a real colt 45 revolver at first glance. Part of many an epic cowboys and indians, uhhh, people of indigenous origin, game.

Great question. The photograph was taken in West Virginia, that looks like something that you would find in a more rural community. But you have to figure that he was making speeches all day long in different locations and they probably needed something for him to be elevated a bit. Maybe they were carrying it with them...
Could have belonged to a shop owner. Might have thought nothing of loaning it to him, and then taking it and putting it back behind the counter.
I just don't know.
Eta. He seems to be speaking into some kind of microphone. You see the cord go down and looks like it wraps around his back but then where does it go? You can't see it running along the ground anywhere at the foot of the stool...
