60k ish. No tailgating, a lot of tobacco smoke (TS lights engulfed), the smell of bourbon. A bag of peanuts, a program, a coke in a paper cup and maybe a pennant. A flask or two, everyone dressed to the 9s. Mike paraded about in his cage. No silly light displays, no silly fireworks, no silly music - just the GBFTL [and they were AWESOME). Did I mention parking and traffic - nary a problem

Yep. Nothing funner than watching the opposing team have to to run by a 300lb angry Tiger.

Believe his name was Bourne (sp). Was always paging a doctor and talking about insurance...plus, a mic and a few megaphones

And a ticket cost $5, or equivalent to $40 today
After fees and such your average season ticket holder is paying roughly 5x that now

Yes except for the no tailgating part. We always did a lot of tailgating.

We're talking pre-Jefferson Pilot? You are an old guy. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.)

1. The weed is a lot better. (I mean a lot better.)
2. Four-wheelers >>>> three-wheelers
3. ?
That's about it.

Sid Crocker was stadium Emcee. He was a legend.
They grilled hamburgers at the concession stands and you could get a hot burger right off the grille if you timed it right. The smoke off the grille rose up into the seating areas and it added to the mystique.
Each section seemed to have a “cheerleader ” of sorts extorting fans around them to yell. One was named Big Red, he was also a legend. When he started yelling “tiger bait” during warm ups it gave you goose bumps.
Of course the Tiger was trotted out and that alone was an experience. Mike was ours and we were proud to show him off.
Games seemed to fly by. There weren’t TV timeouts then. Teams ran the ball a lot and you could play a game in way less than three hours.
Tailgating wasn’t a thing, but going out after the game was. That’s when the partying really started. Sure everyone snuck their whiskey in, but postgame was huge especially after a big win.
Of course it all happened on Saturday night,

60,000 Tiger Stadium > 102,000 Tiger Stadium.
Stadium was better when it was just a bowl with the only second level being in the south end zone. I hate the erector set add-ons in the west, east and south sides of the stadium.

Who remembers the Student Stampede before the game started? Back then, student seats weren't reserved, so there was always a stampede of students when the gates were opened for that section.
Literally, a stampede. I sold Coke and peanuts in the stadium back then, and you could always tell when the student gates opened because of the sound of a thundering herd running for the seats before you saw a single body come out of the portal.
Then came the eventual fights over seating, primarily because the frat rats would send their pledges out to "reserve" entire rows of seats long before the full members showed up. There was always squabbling (and sometimes a few thrown drinks or fists) between frats.
Good times, for sure.

No day games prior to massive TV coverage. Remember there was basically one college game on network TV on Saturday during the day with a big game on occasionally, as well.

Look up the video of LSU-ND 1971 on YouTube; complete telecast with John Ferguson & Walter Hill’s radio broadcast for audio. Good sample, but no way to reproduce all the sights, sounds, and smells.

“Tigahbait…Tigahbait…Tigahbait…”
