Who had a better freshman year... Mathieu or Stingley?

Watching some rookie highlights of Mathieu that popped up on YouTube and wanted some feedback on who you felt had a better FRESHMAN year.

I’d put them even as freshmen. Overall, Mathieu by a mile. He was a Heisman finalist as a defensive/st player.

I think Stingley because he was a day one starter and played the vast majority of snaps. Mathieu played himself into the field that first year and by mid season took over that starting role.

Matthieu was a sophomore that year

Yeah, their overall LSU career isn't even close so that's why i was curious about their freshman year.

Stingley had way more hype coming in than Mathieu. Both were amazing, but it seems like Mathieu had more highlight plays.

The stats may not show it, but 2011 was by far Mathieu's best year. It was one of the best years ever by a defensive player in history.

Stingley only because Mathieu's big year was his soph season. He was still very good as a frosh

Stingley had the best freshman year. I think TM had the best LSU career if you don’t care that they did not finish.

You people need to refresh your memories of Mathieu’s freshman year.
57 tackles
8.5 TFL
4.5 Sacks
2 Ints
2 FR
5 FF
7 PBU
Stingley was great as a freshman. Honey Badger was still better.

Mathieu’s freshman cotton bowl performance was nasty

2011 TM7 should’ve won the Heisman. Have never seen a single defensive player in my lifetime impact a game as much as he did. So many momentum changing plays. Legend.

Wow. I knew Mathieu had shown flashes his freshman year and had considered the bowl game against AtM his coming out party, but those stats are absolutely filthy.

Still pissed they called back that touchdown he scored at the end of the game. Never seen a TD get overturned due to an unsportsmanlike conduct on someone else who wasn’t involved in the play that was dumb.

We drove up to ATL for LSU opener against UNC which was Matheiu’s first game. I remember he made several big plays that game. Matheiu def was better however you slice it

go checks TM7s stats from his first game as a tiger. North Carolina. Dude balled out from day 1.

Freshman year only it’s Stingley by a mile. He led the SEC in interception and was a first team all American. Mathieu wasn’t even a starter.

His punt returns alone probably won 2 or 3 games for us. Especially that Arkansas game. Completely switched the momentum.

Disagree
Matthieu was better as a sophomore, best defensive year for an LSU player ever. But Stingley’s freshman year he was matched up most times with opponents best receiver. Tyrann was a nickel guy who didn’t even play a majority of snaps until the back end of the season. He wasn’t locking down any receivers. He was just roaming and used to blitz and cause havoc.

Mathieu was the most impactful player on the field even as a freshman. I thought there was no way he could duplicate what he did. I was very wrong!
