Jeff Bower was coasting at the end. He needed to go.

Should be #1 Auburn is the hardest job in CFB. Malzahn had them in contention most years.
Contention means what? He mostly went 7-5. He had two great seasons out of 8? His stock is completely gone now that he left Auburn and that means he needed Auburn more than Auburn needed him.

Going back a ways, I say Stovall at LSU (early 80’s)

Mullen firing was worse
If the 12 team playoff had existed then Mullen would have made it his first 3 years and got fired in year 4

Perhaps a little early but John Blake looks pretty good at this point of time

2018 they had 3 losses coming to the post season
26-17 Kentucky (at home)
36-17 UGA
38-17 Mizzou (at home)
2020 had 3 losses coming into the post season, was a shortened season too so maybe they sneak in but no guarantee especially with G5 qualifiers
2019 had a shot
2 losses total, one to the west champ LsU and one to the east champ UGA
But 2018 zero shot of playoffs even with 12 teams
2020 remote shot
2019 good shot

Houston Nutt at Arkansas has to be one of the worst firings. Keep in mind winning at Arkansas is like winning at Kentucky or Mississippi State. 42-38 SEC record in 10 years. Last 2 years was tied for the most wins in SEC,3 SEC west titles in 10 years, a Cotton Bowl and Capital One Bowl the last 2 years. 8 Bowls in 10 years. In 10 years lost to 2 non-conference opponents; Southern Cal and Texas during the time frame they were winning the NC's. You see how bad ARkansas has fallen since with a SEC percentage below 30%.

Nutt was a great coach when his team was the underdog. When his teams became the favorite, he shite the bed constantly. He was always putting his name out for new jobs forcing Arkansas to give him a raise after 7 win seasons where his seat may have gotten a little warm. He was caught sexting a local reporter in the tunnel before they were running out onto the field for a game.
He was also extremely petty. When he wasn’t given exactly what he wanted after two years at Ole Miss, he tanked the program. They stopped recruiting, they were serving players nothing but pizza during the 2011 season and not even checking if they were going to class. That’s why what Freeze did was such a miracle because when he came in, half the team (not an exaggeration) was at risk of being academically ineligible for the 2012 season. And Freeze salvaged that recruiting class even after he had recruits telling him they hadn’t heard from any Ole Miss coaches in 6-7 months.
Arkansas did right by firing him

Freeze at Ole Miss - send him to rehab, but he was the best coach they had and he wanted to be there.

Lane is miserable in oxford.
Sure sounds like a miserable person

I laugh at Nebraska every year. You fired a 9-3 coach because 9-3 was mediocre per Trev Alberts on ESPN.
They have lost more than 3 games every season for....
21 years.
As I said. I laugh at them EVERY year.

They had delusions of grander as well as constantly looking north. Even though USM was winning more consistently under Bower they were always 3rd in the state for attention and money.
No one in Hattiesburg gave a shite about Ole Miss and MSU during that period. Outside of a couple years under Sherrell and the manning years, neither in state school had much success.
USM fans were looking at schools like Louisville and TCU, schools they used to beat often, start to surpass them on the field and getting more attention nationally. It also didnt help that Bower was an uber conservative, defense and running game type coach and most of the other schools in the conference had moved on to the flashier spread offense. It was just another way USM had been left behind.

Gus was going to get fired by Auburn. Firing him after 2020 with interim President, AD whose contract was up soon, boosters out of ‘alignment’ with admin was impossibly stupid.
That Covid year was meaningless anyway, and Gus had a winning record FWIW against an all SEC schedule. I think those that wanted Gus gone were scared to give him another season where he had the Alabama game at home.

Nutt inherited a loaded team from Danny Ford just like he did at Ole Miss and both times couldn't get to Atlanta.
He did get to Atlanta in 2002 only because Bama cheated and was ineligible. Arkansas got blown out at home by the same Bama team. Got blown out by Georgia in Atlanta and got blown out by a 7-5 Minnesota team in the Music City Bowl.
In 2003 Arkansas gets pretty much all the players back with first round talent. They start out 4-0 with a Texas win in Austin but didn't win a game in October that knocked them out of the BCS picture.
The worm began to turn on Nutt and flirted with the Nebraska job knowing very well he would never take that job but did get a raise in the process. He gets a two year pass from his boss no matter what happened.
Fast forward to 2005 to 2007 and Nutt accumulated more talent on those teams than he ever did in his career at Arkansas.
2006 was so promising but began as a disaster, getting destroyed by USC 50-14 at home. Injuries, fumbles to turnovers and no QB.
Arkansas puts in freshman QB and they win the next eight games but was yanked after throwing one interception. Casey Dick does ok until he had the worst performance by an Arkansas starting QB in a game against LSU 3/17 29 yards passing, McFadden had 33 yards passing on two throws.
Arkansas would end the season on a three game losing streak due to QB issues and off the field problems.
Arkansas began the 2007 season with almost all the players returning.
Arkansas was getting blown out by Bama and got back into the game but lost in the final seconds.
Arkansas lost to Kentucky 42-29 at home despite having more total yards.
Arkansas lost to Auburn at home 9-7 and Auburn didn't score a TD.
Arkansas gets blown out by Tennessee and only thing good about that year was the LSU win.
Nutt "resigns" and takes the Ole Miss Job that was agreed upon months in advance. Frank Broyles retired, new boss comes in and no Darren McFadden in 2008 and a potential losing season. A good time to bail.
10 years is enough time and Arkansas fans were tired of Nutt just as Mark Stoops who has stayed at a 10 year plus period at Kentucky are tired of him.

Exactly- and then Memphis, Rice, UCF and ECU started catching up. C-USA pretty much owned Bower after 2000. Frankly I wondered if his relationship with the league (and in particular the officials) was so poor that it impacted result. The guy was never really one to be diplomatic.
Couple I don't remember seeing mentioned:
Steve Logan at ECU
David Cutcliffe at Ole Miss. That was just their AD throwing his weight around or something. And who did they hire? Ed Orgeron, who managed a .286 winning percentage there. Just moronic.
