re: Why is it so difficult to find great coaches?

A lot of coaches just aren't that smart. The ones who are rise to the top, regardless of their background.

It's not. There's just only 1 team that can win a national championship every year, and for oh, 1/3 of the FBS schools if you're not that 1 team at least every 4 years, then you're trash.

I have never understood why AD's dont look toward the FCS talent pool for coaches. For instance why would Texas not take North Dakota States head coach. The man has won the last 2 national championships, got his team in a position for a 3rd title albeit at the FCS level. He understands how to prepare for the playoffs, which is something FBS coaches are gonna have to do now. Recruting would not be a problem, if it was a prestigous program. A team like Wyoming will take a chance on these guys, which have limited resources and talent pool but yet a team like Florida will hire Muschamp who has never had any headcoaching experience and its a "safer" pick because he has experience at a bigger school. More schools should go the "Jim Tressel route" imo.

Luck is what may occur on one play or one game. Not over the course of 8 years. His winning percentage bears it out. He's a solid coach. It just so happens some of the other greatest coaches and players have been in the same division as Miles over the last 5 years and yet we're still competing.

Only a complete retard didn't think Malzahn was a homerun hire. He was the best offensive coach in football who even proved himself as a head coach for a year.
This is some revisionist history right here.

Every situation is different. The program's recruiting grounds sometimes produce more or better types of players than other schools. What worked great at one school might not work at another school...philosophy (offense and defense), recruiting, playcalling, competition from other schools.
It is very much a crapshoot when hiring a coach and in turn coaching staff. More often than not, it doesnt work out.
This is why I think of torture when I read moron posters whining about replacing successful coaches just because.

The great coaches who have sustained success over 10 or more years have two things in common: 1. They are excellent recruiters. 2. They know how to control a program.
People like Saban and Miles are not highly intelligent playcallers or game managers. But year in and year out they have the best players in the game and they know how to control those players to where no individual is bigger than the coach or the program. Great playcallers who can't recruit and/or who can't control a program will eventually fail when the game catches up to them.
If I'm an AD, I want a CEO and a recruiter. Playcallers can be hired to work for them.

That's like saying why don't we elect more small town mayors to be president?
An FCS coach knows how to do everything a BCS coach does, but only on a drastically different scale. Dealing with a controlling booster at Texas is very different than dealing with one at ND State. Being one of the most famous people in America is very different than being a respected figure in a small college town. Recruiting Julio Jones is very different than recruiting a kid who wants to play for Nebraska but ends up playing for you as the backup to his backup plan. You need a taste of what its like to work at a place like Texas/LSU/Bama, etc before you are ready to step into a job like that.

I used to think that to, then Jim Tressel kind of happened. Didn't Paul Johnson win the ACC at friggin Ga Tech?

I'm just glad Ohio State seems to have a string of good luck with its coaches.

quote:I don't buy that. No all coaches were created the same and many have different coaching styles. Some coaches are better closers in recruiting, some coaches are better at elevating their talent. Some are motivators and some are x and o guys. Regardless of how good the coaches are they still need some lucky breaks to win the NC.
Find a lucky one because every good coach is working their arse off just the same.
Saban's strength to this point is his ability to recruit and evaluate talent. His team generally has better players than your team. Plus, he has gotten a lot of breaks to win those NC. Many people will tell you that "luck" is what happens when "opportunity meets hard work".

greatness comes in short supply. Make a list of great "xxxxxx". It doesn't matter what you start listing, you're going to have a small number. It is the nature of greatness. It isn't easy. And, it doesn't come often. And, it is almost impossible to sustain.

who did he steal that from?
Posted on 12/17/13 at 12:18 pm to SwaggerCopter
Its difficult because the word "great" is overused and means alot more than how people use it so loosely these days. Very few things/people are truly GREAT but there are many out there than would truly fit the classification of really good.
