This is a guy who

A. Hasn't been on a sideline in 10 years
B. Hasn't recruited in 25 years
C. Struggled dealing with/developing rookies in the first place

Yeah you'll will the press conference but thats about it. LSU needs Tennessee to be good to battle Bama and Florida with us. Come on Vols, get it together. There are much better options out there.

Big name that has had a lot of exposure being at espn. People remember him being better than he was because he comes across as likable.

They think he will be good because
1. He's a big name that will draw recruits in
2. He won a Superbowl
They think that these things coupled together will cause them to be a power house again and make the SEC as a whole shite it's self. Hence, they want the grudenator

Everyone is wondering this. I guess it's a grasping at straws thing. Makes no sense to the rest of us, but a few of their posters think he or Lane Kiffin are football coaching gods or something.

Recruiting is fhe least of my concerns. And he was a successful coach at the highest level whose hiring would immediately change the perception of the Tennessee program around the country.

Go look at the Raiders record before Gruden. Look at the Raiders record with Gruden. Finally, look at the Raiders record after Gruden.

People remember Gruden because he turned the Raiders around.

Because we are stupid. Otherwise we wouldn't be searching for new HC again and again.

If my memory serves, Gruden inherited a great team from Tony Dungy and Kiffin Sr. was his DC.
He might be better than 90% of current SEC coaches on Xs and Os, but college football is different with NFL.

That is the laziest perspective.

Why didn't Dungy win at a high level with those players? Does Gruden not get credit as well for beating the Oakland team he built from 98-01 in that Super Bowl? And Tony Dungy inherited Peyton Manning, isn't he just getting credit for riding Peyton's coatails or nah since that doesn't fit the Gruden won with Dungy players narrative?

It's no doubt that he is great at Xs and Os, and I would be happy if we have him. Isn't ESPN pays him like 8 MM for MNF? How much Vols would pay him? 6 MM?

Totally agree. Would be a terrible hire IMO.

This is also a lazy argument. Someone above credits Gruden for turning around the Raiders. They were 4-12 the year before he was hired but had been mediocre before that going 7-9, 8-8,9-7,10-6.
Compare that to TB before Dungy. They were 7-9 the year before he was hired but had lost double digits 12 years in row before that. Dungy went 6-10 his first year then made the playoffs (1st time in 15 years) 8-8 3rd year thenmade the playoffs 3 years in row including NFC CG appearance in 99. He was 9-7 his last year a WC losss.
After going 12-4 and winning the SB his first year in TB Gruden went 7-9 and 5-11 then 11-5 lost WC 4-12, 9-7, 9-7 No playoffs. So overall Dungy had a better winning percentage in TB and inherited a worse situation. He did way better in Indy where his worst season was 10-6, granted he had a franchise QB.

Overall I think Gruden is one of the most overrated coaches of all time. I at least understood some hype 7-8 years ago but now? Good luck with that if Tennessee does hire him.

ETA: Dungy TB 54-42 .556 Indy : 85-27
Gruden : Oak : 38-26 TB : 57-55

People assume he's a great offensive mind, but he was fired for never being able to develop a QB and building an offense around one despite using massive amounts of draft capital trying to find one.

Total offense ranks in Tampa
04- 22nd
05-23rd
06- 29th
07-18th
08- 14th

Also he hasn't coached since 2008, and offenses have become a completely different world from then until now, especially on the college level. His actual offensive system is probably outdated at this point, and it's not a guarantee that he comes in and is great at that

So we don’t have to hear bullshite like “Tennessee should hire Les Miles” like we are some second rate program that should be happy to grab the leftovers after the top teams are done with them.
