Why does the coach have to be a great offensive mind?

I've heard it argued repeatedly that we can't keep Coach O because we need a coach that is a "great or progressive offensive mind" - however, it seems that the most repeated knock on Les was that he wouldn't get out of the way and let his coordinators do their job. Those two philosophies seem to contradict each other. What's wrong with the head coach being a great general manager and, above all, a great recruiter, who has coordinators who are great offensive and defensive minds? A head coach who is a CEO, if you will...

You don't need a great offensive mind

You need a mind that can adjust and gameplan against the best coaches in America, whether that's defensively or offensively or both....Coach O is not that

I said it in another thread but it's this simple for the people that just want O with a "good young OC"

A good coordinator is hard to keep and a bad coordinator is hard to get rid of.

Isn't the gameplan, in effect, the plays and alignments that the coordinators call? If changing the playcalling is the head coach's job, what's the point of coordinators?

Generally the best head coaches who succeed at the highest level are also elite coordinators.

They can be great offensive minds (Spurrier, Meyer) or defensive minds (Saban, Carroll, Stoops) but if they don't bring mastery of one side of the football to the table they are going to be a lot more dependent upon their coordinators for success.

By no means am I suggesting that victories over our last 3 opponents (counting the attempted forfeit by Florida) have won him the job. I'm just pointing out the hypocrisy of those who bitched about Les not letting the coordinators do their job but also bitch that O is inferior because he is a guy who lets the coordinators do their job.

I think you've merged two separate issues and created a straw man in the process. It is about performance. Les did meddle with the offense and it suffered - because he lacks a top notch level of offensive expertise.

I don't want an offensive coach. I want a defensive minded coach. The offense has to be flexible; flexible in it's formations, in it's playcalling, with it's overall strategy. With the talent LSU has, it can pull that off.

Just attack weakness. When they adjust, attack what they gave up to shore up that weakness. Rinse. Repeat. To hell with systems. You dictate to the defense.

A defensive coach will rely on the expertise of his staff. He will provide direction. At least the team would not be stuck on a system or have this "we HAVE to do ______ every game because that's what we do".

There are several coaches that can held up as examples. Belechick is one. NE will pass 60 times one game and run 40 times another. Depends on what the opponent is doing.

You idiots just want Coach O as the face of the program with Saban/Meyer type results. You're not going to get it with Coach O. If we hired a good HC and just let Coach O do all the media/interview stuff would that make you guys happy? You're suggesting we hire someone because he's good at letting other people do the thinking for him.

This is the perfect example of what we should do and what Les wouldn't do. Football at this level can get pretty sophisticated but the process of attacking someone's weakness is so elementary.

Please elaborate on this? I think most would agree that the four top coaches in the game today are Saban, Harbaugh, Meyer and Swinny.

Three of the four have never been a coordinator.

there is no hypocrisy since literally no one (but you) is making the argument that "O is inferior because he is a guy who lets the coordinators do their job".

Answer this, say we had fired Les last year and hired Fisher, what jobs do you think Coach O would be in line for? Texas? Would Florida State have gone after him if Fisher left? Or would it be something like ULL?

So what happens when Aranda leaves or the new OC leaves because of thier success at LSU?

You think it's that easy to go find elite replacements?

The top coaches in the country control one side of the ball (Saban-D, Urban-O, Harbaugh-O, Jimbo-O, Patterson-D, Petersen-O). When your HC can run one group, you dont have to have an elite Coordinator for that side.

And it's MUCH easier to find one good coordinator than it is two. O brings very little to the table from a scheming perspective, why not get a coach that you can rely on to out scheme the opponent?

They've never "formally" been coordinators, but functionally, they're the chief engineers of the team's offense/defense.

Alabama is running Saban's defense. Not Kirby's. Not Pruitt's. It's Saban's defense, and any DC that works under him is simply managing the pieces of a system that's already been fine tuned and developed.

Same with Harbaugh, Meyer, Fisher, etc. The elite head coaches are generally specialists on either offense or defense.

First off, Dabo doesnt belong in the same group at the other 3.

Second, it is WIDELY accepted that Saban, Harbaugh, and Meyer are the epitome of experts on their side of the ball. You don't think harbaugh and Urban created the offense they are running, just because they were not OC's before?
