Why did the Head Coach in waiting trend die?

It seemed like every major school was jumping on it and some even had success - Jimbo, Chip Kelly, Bielema. Suddenly within a few years it was totally gone. How many people even remember it these days except for the die hard fans.

It was always stupid. Either the head coach ends up getting fired or the coach-in-waiting gets offered a comparable job (i.e. Muschamp) before he can take over.
Do you think Mack Brown and Bill Stewart were thrilled about their situations with Muschamp and Holgorsen, respectively? It's like pseudo firing the HC without actually firing him. I'm sure it created a harmonious working environment.

Muschamp was the HCIW at Texas for a year or so, and they were rightly ridiculed for it.

To be fair Mack Brown peaked in 2005 and should have stayed retired.

becuase it never worked out and created too much drama.
FSU - pushed Bowden out early to keep Jimbo happy
Tx - Muschamp left early to go to UF
not sure about Kelly.

He had a fill in role at UNC and did it very, very well.

It was dumb idea. You're basically telling recruits look, this guy has one foot out the door but we really don't know so they didn't know what to do (see Texas dropoff in recruiting during their deal with Muschamp) and also, the coach in waiting usually jumped to a head coach job before the sitting head coach retired.
A coach needs to tell prospects he is the coach and has no plans on moving on no matter what he truth is.

It was stupid, but I will say that FSU had to do with Bowden literally being lost on the sidelines but refusing to retire. In that situation, it made sense.

Yep. It was a ploy to try and get coaches to not jump at other head coaching opportunities. It also allowed the ADs to pay more to the HCIW than what they would pay to any assistant.

It only makes since if the current HC is guaranteeing retirement and has it in writing before the year.

Well I don't think it's dead completely. Apparently DEnBrock is the head coach and waiting at lsu. According to a source within Taff.

UNC hasn’t had a 10 win season yet and has 1 Coastal championship. I mean, I wouldn’t call that a job well done with all the coaching talent out there, but opinions vary.

Let me remind you of a forgotten story about one coach and coach in waiting who got completely shafted and it set back a football program for a decade.
Once upon a time a fat guy accumlated a 64-36 record over 8 seasons at his alma mater highlighted by 3 10+ Win top 17 seasons. This included an 11 win season in which they made the Orange Bowl and finished in the Coaches Top 10.
In year 9 the coach went 2-10 yet was not fired.
The following year the coach turned things around drastically and the team went 9-4 and finished ranked in the Top 25.
Then he was fired.
This coach had a head coach in waiting by his side who was forced to get another job at a perennial power 5 doormat.
Said former coach in waiting Had two 9 win top 25 seasons at said doormat and was given a job at a big time program where he has since had plenty of success but just can't get over the hump in big games.
The program in question that fired the fat alum and passed on the guy who was supposed to be coach in waiting has yet to win more than 8 games in a season ever since and they are on their 4th head coach (counting an interim for a full year).
Who can name the parties involved here?

FSU didn’t push Bowden out early. If anything they waited far too long.
