He's been eyeing the Oregon and Washington jobs for a few years now. He would have left for either one. I say it's a great move for him. Not thrust into all the scrutinies that come with jobs like USC and Texas. Doesn't have to live up to an extra expectations at UW. Bet they win a Pac-12 Championship within 3-4 years though. He's a good name. Wouldn't be surprised if they're the powerhouse of the P-12 for the next decade once they get going.

He doesn't have a special needs kid; his son is a cancer survivor. He had a brain tumor and the the cancer spread to his spine. The cancer is in remission and all is clear for now. Heck it was found all the way back when he was an assistant at Oregon around 10 years ago.
With the new facilities UW looks to be a great spot to be in and a much better conference that Boise. I think things got stale for him at Boise and saw a chance to stay in the same region where he has a lot of recruiting connections. Mostly I think he likes the Northwest and there isn't another program other than Oregon where he could move up and stay in the same geographical region.

Programs like Boise St. do not become dynasties. They recruit mostly the Northwest. Oregon State has gotten better, WSU hired Leaach, UW has gotten better. He previously could have gotten some of those to Boise but are now going to Pac-12 schools. UW probably has way more upside and with about the same pressure to win than Boise St.

This here is what I am talking about though. All of this was true when he was apparently uninterested in the USC job, and all the other jobs that he shot down even being considered for because he loved living in Boise. I get it from a football and career perspective, but why does that all of a sudden sell him when it hasn't for years?

There is always smoke around coaches when an opening occurs. But we never gave anyone the time of day beyond Sumlin. He was literally our first and only choice no matter how it may be framed and Bill Byrne had about as much input into the decision as you or I. Everything else was just show.
Jim Wilson fired Sherman and hired Sumlin (and not necessarily in that order). For good or bad, our "search committee" was Wilson going two doors down and having coffee with the Sumlins.

Makes perfect sense to me. Job is in the Pacific NW which is where he wants to be, its a step up by getting into a major conference alone, let alone the fact that Washington has some history, and the school is committed enough to the program that they just built a brand new stadium, but lacks the high pressure and intensity a job like So Cal or UCLA brings

Just offering a correction, not a flame, he is not from Pacific NW...he is from NorCal (Yuba City), Went to UC Davis (outside Sacramento).
The pressures at UW are significantly less than either of the LA schools. Also, I think he would have looked harder at the Cal job when it came open a couple years back but the cupboard was completely bare there.
Sarc left the UW program in pretty good shape.
Oh and more than doubling his salary probably didn't hurt.

You could have also played on the fact that all of his following reasons weren't reasons as to why it was not a lateral move, but were actually reasons why he would make the move despite it being just that...a lateral move.

UW is a premier football program historically.
UW is a also premier university in America in a jewel city.
First season 1889 - and later charter member of what has become the Pac-12.
From 1977 through 2003, Washington had 27 consecutive non-losing seasons.
15 Pacific-10 Conference championships, seven Rose Bowl titles (won a Rose Bowl every decade since the 1950's), and four national championships recognized by the NCAA.
UW QB alumni - second-most QB starts in NFL history.
All but two of the last 19 starting quarterbacks for UW - dating back to 1970 - have gone on to the NFL
Arguably (along with UCLA) the 2nd best program all-time in the Pac-12.
If you think Boise St. is on par with that - then you no very little of the Pac-12's history.
