Now he leaves to go to Washington? Seems like it's basically a lateral move, why would he do that?
as somebody who would probably get labeled as a Boise pumper on this site I really have to wonder what you just smoked to think going from Boise to Washington is a lateral move.
while Boise is a solid coaching spot b/c the school actually cares about football it is in no way anywhere near as good a job as Washington. Even if they ever escape the Mountain West for a power 5 conference they are still be behind Washington b/c they are in a tiny state with a very small population.

I obviously don't know Petersen on a personal level, but him and UW seem like a great fit. While USC is considered a 10 job in College Football, it isn't the right fit for every single coach.

Honestly, UW would be a great job for most. Low pressure, enough resources and history to win, nice location if you're into it.

My wife has a lot of family in Boise that live in the same area as him. They say that his soon isn't impaired, he just needed lots and lots of rehab and therapy, like had to struggle to learn to speak and had some physical limitations. But now, for the most part is a normal 15 year old kid. Maybe he's a little behind because of what he had to go through, but he's not impaired.
Honestly form what they say, and the more you hear about him Petersen seems to be really good guy.

Okay, obviously it was a mistake to say it is a lateral move.
What I am getting at is that Petersen has turned down better jobs than UW in the past in order to stay at Boise St. It just seems odd that this is the job to get him to leave when he could have had better jobs but turned them down because he likes where he is

Seriously not bashing, but you have to be pretty young. UW is a great school to be a coach at. Big Conference, Good Location, Alumni Support and most importantly, lots o' money.
And USC is more of a high profile fast pace program. UW is not. I would imagine that lifestyle is more appealing to Petersen. More family time etc.

Totally agree.
To me UW seems to be one of the perfect coaching spots. Great location, great facilities, long winning tradition, a patient administration, resources to get paid well and and win. Your'e also in a conference where a great season gets you into the title game and you have a solid fan-base that accepts some losses without having meltdowns.
Really you can't ask for a better spot unless you're looking to be the highest paid coach in the country.

I have a very good friend who was not willing to relocate to the big city for more money, because he liked his hometown and being near family.
Granted Seattle is not Boise, but Seattle is definitely not Los Angeles.
I also think he felt Boise St.'s window closing and this might be his last chance at a good job in the Northwest.

what job is better is a purely subjective thing
some people may view USC as a top 3 job b/c of the prestige, location, and money. Others may think that job would suck b/c of the spoiled fans, high pressure to win a title every year, the location of the school in Cali.
Hell, maybe he didn't like the people working in the AD and wanted to find an AD he felt more comfortable working for.

Great summation.
UW is a quality of life decision (if that's your type of quality of life) w/o being at the little kids table - like Boise St.
Peterson (by all accounts) loved living in Boise - but Pac-12 is the next step up - with a location in the NW that is part of the same type of country as Idaho.

Boise can make BCS games easy, Boise cannot make the playoff easy. His clock was ticking at Boise especially since his 2.1 million$ salary was way out of the price range for Boise. He had been losing his top assistants yearly as well
Now he can afford his assistants, not put stress on the school for his salary and have a solid recruiting ground in Washington/PacNW/Cali

Washington is a beautiful state as is the Pacific NW. UDUB fans are also not crazies like you find in the SEC.

Spoken like someone who has never been to Seattle or the UW campus.
Been there twice for games -- last time was for the LSU game in 2009. LSU fans really had a great time in Seattle. The campus is phenomenal -- views of Rainier alone are incredible. One of the best public universities in the country -- with one of the best medical schools.
If my daughter wanted to go to UW, it's one of the very few schools I wouldn't hesitate to pay the out of state tuition.
UW has struggled to consistently win since Oregon, USC and Stanford ascended to the top of the conference but UW is a bit of a sleeping giant waiting for the right coach.
Lastly, if Boise were really comparable to UW, then why did the Pac 12 pass them over during the recent round of expansion? Boise is a nice town and they've had a great run in football, but we are talking apples and oranges here.
