Why are coaches (Miles, Jurgen) seemingly so oblivious

JK playing players out of positions and shuffling the lineups so much so as to completely kill any semblance of cohesion, Miles flat out refusing to do anything but play 70's Bo ball despite year after year of offensive production that ranks in the triple digits. How is it that these guys and coaches like them, at the upper echelons of their professions, are so oblivious to OBVIOUS tactical changes that would improve their position dramatically, to the point that they are given chance after chance after chance until they finally get fired? It boggles my mind.

soccer has positions?

Miles has absolutely no imagination. A deep thought for him is whether to run right or throw deep on first down. He once made a comment around reading books." That would make a good book, I don't read books but I would read that one". Don't remember what he was referring too, but I remember thinking no wonder we have the same game plan every team we play.

You see that's the thing, i could get this for a coach at a small school or a position coach or whatever, but to get to the point in your career where you're the football coach at LSU or the head coach of the USMNT, you'd think it would require a bit of self-awareness and analysis

At a certain point, people can begin to lose their desire to evolve and, as a result, they stagnate. Outsiders can try to point out their obvious flaws, but no one can make someone change their ways - an internal desire for change is needed.

I think Miles began to believe his own mantra rather than look at the landscape of CFB and modernize. This was probably due to a constant re-inforcement of cash and contract extensions.

Well, Jurgen played for Tottenham so I'm really baffled that Sunil was able to look past that

They get bedded in and surround themselves with like minded thinkers

Their ideas got them to where they are, which was incredibly successful coaches, sometimes it's hard to change from a formula that gave you all your success in life.

Yeah, well a lot of things are hard, if they were as "successful" as you say they would have learned to conform.

My theory on 1/9/12 - Miles said "This worked in game 1, it will work in game 2." Saban said "They beat me with this in game 1, I'm not going to let them beat me with this in game 2."
Look at how many times Saban has lost to the same coach in back to back years. It's not often. Some coaches are just stubborn and set in their ways.

Football coaches are super busy year round so probably none of them read much. Miles in particular was busy developing the offense

Miles used to be more offensive oriented, but a couple of things happened to him over the years.
At Oklahoma St he lost to Texas, after having a 35 pt lead, I believe.
At LSU, he had the Jarrett Lee situation, where the QB was finding new and imaginative ways to throw pick-6's.
Miles was a Shembechler disciple, and I figure that he taught that if you have the better talent, the game is yours to lose... so don't lose it. It's a strategy that served him to win 75% of his games here, As long as Alabama was the only team he couldn't beat by playing it safe, he was fine. But when Ole Miss started pushing things, I think he just got taken down by changes. Cameron was running a somewhat modern offense, but we still didn't have the quarterback for that scheme to work.
