I think Lanning is the answer. We all agree that it’d be a slam dunk hire but nobody even ponders it because we don’t think it’s possible. But of the ones named, he’s probably the only one that has gotten a phone call

Mike Denbrock
I'm not saying he would be MY choice....or even LSU's 4th, 5th, 6th choice. But if you are asking for "out of left field" candidates, I think he qualifies.
1. He obviously had recent great success at LSU. Obviously a large portion of that had to do with Daniels, Nabers, Thomas, etc. But you could argue Daniels was not setting the world on fire prior to coming to LSU and under Denbrock he, and others, developed into the best offense in the nation. One that fell off a cliff when BK opted for Sloan over Denbrock.
2. ND has been in the top 10 in scoring offense the last two seasons. LSU can barely score 25 points. When coaching changes are made the tendency is to go in the opposite direction of what caused the failure. LSU's horrible offense ultimately led to BK's ousting.
3. He's familiar with LSU. More importantly, LSU's AD is familiarize with Denbrock. Both during his time as LSU's OC and now as a coach on the staff on which AD's son plays.
It wouldn't be a popular pick by any means, but I suspect he would be open to retaining Baker (if he didn't get an HC) job, and the "sell" to the fanbase would be (1) LSU is combining the best OC LSU has had in the last 5 years with the best DC and (2) it wouldn't required a massive contract commitment like BK did.
Again, I'm not advocating for it. I could just see him being in consideration if several other options fizzled out.
