I'm pretty sure the op is talking about football or men's basketball, not the minor sports.

More importantly, how are the coaches we 'missed' doing now
Tom Herman: fired from the Florida Atlantic Owls, Ed Orgeron is hands down a better coach
Lincoln Riley: Meh at USC, Brian Kelly's tenure here at LSU was a good bit more impressive

Okie State lost to OU in 2004.
And 2003…by a LOT. OSU finished 2nd to last in their division in 2004.
Les wasn’t the first option, or the second or third. But he was available, affordable, and willing to make a move relatively late in the cycle.
LSU has been at their best when they hired an HC that WASN’T the favorite of the fanbase

Les Miles was 28-21 at Oklahoma state

Mike Archer.
I think Saban targeted LSU before LSU targeted Saban.

Its been a while so I thought his record would have been better but Okie State previous coach did much worse.

Pretty sure Les Miles was 1st choice
Jack Del Rio was but he stood Skip up. Instead of waiting for NFL season to end Skip offered Miles.

Venebles seems to be doing ok at OK, but he was never considered by this board b/c he was a coordinator. Obviously, Clemson has been much better since he left

Orgeron?
Nope we settled for Orgeron when Fisher and Herman fell through!

Someone posted that we wanted another dude, and he turned us down, and Sexton connected us to Saban. If true, Saban wasn’t the #1. I’ve had too many beers over the years to remember that.
It was Tuberville right?

Bobby Bowd……no. He beat us and stayed
Bo Rein ? Tragedy.
Steve Spurr…..no. We let the players decide.
Tom Herm….nope. Texas
Lincoln Ri….nope. USC
So, twice since ‘79

Saban sought LSU out because Michigan State didn’t renew.

All in all, Les still did a good job.
While I have given miles shite as much as anyone at the end, he was a great coach for LSU and was second to only one guy. Les was great for smash mouth football.
When the game changed he didn’t. That was his only downfall

Jay Johnson and Mulkey in recent memory.
Will Wade was the guy at the time.

Bob Simmons was 30-38
Pat Jones was 62-50-3
Jimmy Johnson was 29-25-3
Jim Stanley was 35-31-2
I could go on…but Les winning percentage at Okie State is 5th best all time. He’s behind Gundy, two dudes who started before Pearl Harbor, and some guy who coached one year during the First World War.
It took Gundy 10 years to notch his second win over OU. Les beat OU in each of his first two seasons. Oklahoma came into those games ranked 4 and 3. Out of 119 meetings, Okie State has won 20 times…that’s it. Les is responsible for 10% of the Cowboys wins in the Bedlam Series…

I don’t recall that for back but i honestly don’t recall if Saban was the top choice

Another interesting fact is Gundy was Les's OC while he was at Okie State. He would have come to LSU with Les but they gave him the job.

I remember a few names tossed around -Pat Sullivan and I think Dennis Erickson from that time before Saban came out of nowhere. People weren’t that excited bc Dinardo had just beat him in the independence bowl.
