I'm below average.

I thought Nick was related to Lou Saban.

And when LSU hired Miles I thought, LSU hired a black coach?

in that 1 regard sure.

I mean Fleck was never Bill Belicheck's DC, nor has he had any success at any other school. or beat 4 ranked teams the year before we hired him.

Saban really did not become "SABAN" until 2008 ....really

This really is true. He's a MUCH better coach at Bama than he was at LSU. We had some great games but he would also throw in the occasional stinker like UGA 2004 or Bama 2002 and we'd lose the occasional game due to his ultra conservative offensive strategy when playing with a lead in the second half.

He hasn't had those type of games at Bama.

I don't know, he really had the 2005-2007 teams set up for a lot of success. Who knows where we would have gone from there, but I think he was just about to hit his stride when he left.

At the time LSU wasn't exactly a prime job.

He made it into one. Before you get too salty about that, remember you hadn't made the SECCG at all, and only won the conference about once a decade.

Same can be said for Alabama in 2007. How many coaches turned down the job before Saban and how many coaches had Bama been through since Bryant? Or are you one of those who cannot answer that question because you came along in 2009 like many "fans" did?

he's just been able to get much better players since he has been at Bama. There really is nothing exceptional about Sabans coaching ability, but his ability to get top high school players to attend Bama is off the charts. That would be the main trait we need to find in a coach is one that will be a great recruiter for LSU. That along with a sense of organization and the ability to be flexible enough o adapt and change with the times. Miles was a good (not great) recruiter but was also unable to change with the times on the offense side of the ball.

A coach who is top level coach, AND can recruit like Saban, will be the coach who overtakes Bama and can take LSU to top of the SEC. Is there someone like that out there that wants to coach at LSU? probably not.

I came to this board, with others because ESPN shut down their forums, which I was on during the good and the bad times for a decade. I was an Alabama fan before Bryant won his first title.

Yes we went through a few coaches. Still managed to win many more SEC titles, SECCG games during Spurrier's great run at Florida no less. Oh and yet another national title.

We demand excellence. You just hope for it.

At some time we'll go through another down period. I've seen a few, even remember when we were thinking about firing Bryant. So us older Bama fans expect it.

But just like the sun rising tomorrow, Bama will find its way back to the top after.

Obviously we should consider Tom Herman, but also don't rule out names like Matt Rhule, P.J. Fleck, Chad Morris, Philip Montgomery, just to name a few.

I wouldn't rule people out. I would just rank them based on their achievements.

LSU was a mid teir ( at best ) job trying to make bowl games.

Now LSU is an elite program trying to remove itself from stagnation and get back on top. Completely different circumstances

We demand excellence too. We just don't have the SEC office in our back yard along with the unfair advantages. Alabama has always enjoyed unfair advantages that they should not need. Easy to demand excellence when the game is rigged in your favor.

Now the old LSU from late 70's to 90's did not. That was an era of really bad politics even for La. standards surrounding LSU along with a myriad of bad decisions. When Emmert was hired as our University President, Bertman elevated to AD and Saban hired as football HC everything changed. Priorities went through a reset and the bar raised forever more.

That is why LSU needs to collude with other schools in SW and SE to form a conference to compete with the fricking SEC or rather Flabama conference. I speak for a section of LSU folks who hate the SEC office and want our leadership to look at other options over the years.

I was going to say the same thing...

now Mullen on the other hand, i think he has proven to be a good coach.. Miss St just doesnt have it.. and he got them to a #1 Ranking.. Mississippi State was ranked #1 at a time under Mullen.. thats impressive.. He should have left when he had the chance.. I would have hired him at Georgia before Kirby Smart.

He is one of the guys who are not on the usual suspects list. Yet, one would think maybe he should? How do we know if he is very much considered candidate and is actually near the top of the list? Not hard to see both sides being super quiet about anything that may be going behind the scenes. There are more out there too that have not been revealed who I bet are vetting interest. No matter what we are hearing it is more than just O, Herman and Jimbo. At least to check out the p's and q's and make sure no rock has been left unturned. There may be an understanding already with a certain candidate. But nothing is official until the ink dries and things can change with the wind:).
