When LSU hired Saban, his HC record was 34-24-1

He hadn't won a national championship. He hadn't even won a conference championship.
Of his five years at Michigan State, they finished ranked only once: his last season (at 7th).
He had all the makings of a good coach, improving the Spartans from train wreck to a 9-2 season in five years; however, by today's standards, he didn't really show signs of being a great coach until he was at LSU.
By today's standards, most of you would have probably poo-pooed his hiring.
My point is this: you never know where the next great coach is going to come from. Sometimes win/loss records or numbers of previous championships isn't the best indicator of who the next great coach will be.
Obviously we should consider Tom Herman, but also don't rule out names like Matt Rhule, P.J. Fleck, Chad Morris, Philip Montgomery, just to name a few.

And LSU is now a more attractive job. Anything less than a sitting proven HC is a fail.

Packer fans circa 1959 and OU fans circa 1998 are glad you didn't make decisions for their teams.

Coach O took a giant shite on the defense this morning for his interview. I think he now sees Aranda as a threat and is trying to neutralize him

stop right there. Those are not "today's standards". Those are standards set by message board idiots. That think W/L is the ultimate deciding factor on if a coach is good or not.
Context is everything, because before Nick Saban won 10 games at Mich St in 1999, they hadnt had a 10 win season since 1965.
Nick Saban also had a nice resume which included stints in the NFL both as a position coach & coordinator.
I keep hearing people say that guys like Dan Mullen or Jim Mora are shitty coaches. Yet they aren't seeing the full context surrounding these candidates.
You're really telling me you're going to discount Dan Muller because he has never WON ANYTHING!!!! at Miss St? Really?
Look at their records before Mullen. Now look at Mullen's record. How can you deny that he is a good coach? Same with Jim Mora Jr. Youre looking at the 2 most successful coaches in their school's history. Yet because they only win 9 games at a shite school, they aren't qualified enough to coach LSU? that's laughable

And he took over an 0-11 team

I mean there's been a real regression for Mora. From 10 wins to 3-6

technically yes, but they were 5-6 w/out the forfeits

Ah, that makes a lot more sense
Can't believe bob toledo was so successful for a bit at ucla

And with Mora, Rosen will be done for the year, so that record will likely get worse anyway.

It was never quite the same though in the post Cade McNown era.

There you go, the next h.c. PJ Fleck!

He had taken over a program under NCAA sanctions in 1995. Also, they historically don't recruit as well there as Michigan, Ohio State or Penn State, so it took longer to build the program up. He had the program in the top 10 in 1999 with a tremendous recruiting class for 2000. However, Michigan State hired Bobby Williams when Saban left and he was a horrible head coach.

First off, he was 43-26-1, and he was co-champion of the MAC. So at least get that right.
When LSU hired Les, his record was 28-24. His claim to fame was batting .500 against OU.
I opened this thread just to make sure we weren't comparing "34-24-1" to "10-25 (plus 9-3 as interim coach)"
Remember -- Gene Chizik was 5-19 at Iowa State. He was then 33-19 at Auburn, including a 14-0 season thanks to Cam Newton, won a title, and then went 4-12 in conference over the next two seasons.
There are hardly any sure things in college football. You can count them on one hand. We were fortunate to get 5 years of Saban. But he's better now than he ever was at LSU. So the odds say we'll probably swing and miss...most schools do when they fire a successful coach.

I watched the highlights of the 2001 Bama game and at that time LSU was 4-3 and Saban was catching a lot of flack from the fans and local media. He was not some sort of "savior" at the time. I remember in 2003 a national radio show host as the season started who was critical of Saban saying that he was a guy who got a lot of credit for doing not all that much.
Saban really did not become "SABAN" until 2008 ....really

Well, damn, PJ fleck's is better. I say Hire him. He looks like the next Nick Saban!

The average fan may not have known who Saban was at the time LSU hired him, but football people did. And he was highly respected and thought to be a future NFL coach. In fact, I seem to recall Bill Polian trying to hire Saban as Colts HC in '98 when he became GM.
I think the second LSU realized Saban was interested they jumped on it. The single greatest good fortune for LSU football in my lifetime. Perfect example why you don't settle without gauging the interest of every great coach in the country.
