does anyone know how he handled it? Was it classy ... did he say "I will be here next season"?
No reason .. just wondering.

He said "I hate it here in Colorado...I wish I was in Stillwater...but Baton rouge would be nice too."
Something to that effect

He was asking for it.

i'll tell you 1 thing, we didn't have boudreaux and thibodeaux in the back leading "GEAUX Tigers" chants in the back like the presser was a freakin pep rally

Coach Miles did not leave Co. St. to come to LSU, it was Oklahoma State. The OSU Fans are still up set on how Coach Miles left. They are telling me that all the way up untill the time Coach Miles left OSU that he was telling them that he was staying at OSU and he was not talking to LSU anymore. I hope Coach Miles has learn his leason on how to go about addressing the issue, about staying at a place (LSU) or leaving to go to another School (Michigan).

He said something along the lines of i am happy here this great place, etc.. He never said "I will not be the next LSU head coach" or "I will be here next". Okie St. fans felt they mislead him.

I think he signed an extension and then left right after.
Not sure if he made comments about staying or not.

Maybe he told Michigan he would be the Head Coach after the NC game.
What else would the guy say with just 3 weeks away from the game.
SMOKESCREEN?

negative
LSU asked for permission to talk to Miles, OSU refused and Miles got pissed. Miles through his agent contacted LSU and they started discussions. OSU got pissed at Miles, T Boone Pickens didnt like Miles (but loved Gundy) anyway and said let him go. Miles left for LSU and paid OSU his $1mm contract buyout.
the end

Les did sign an extension, sometime within the month before he left for LSU, but apparently at the time he signed, the LSU job was not open because Saban didn't announce until Dec. 25.
LSU contacted Miles around December 26 or 27th. Miles never said anything other than I love it at OSU. He did not seek LSU out; LSU sought him out. He did not have an offer from LSU until Jan. 1 or Jan. 2. LSU spoke with him in San Antonio, where OSU was playing in the Alamo Bowl. He returned to Stillwater on Dec. 31, but he did not have an offer from LSU at that time. Once discussions began with LSU, he never denied interest in the LSU job nor affirmed his interest in the job during any press interviews or statements. He simply did not address questions about the issue. But because he did not have an offer before Jan. 1, and probably not formally until Jan. 2, there was nothing to say but what he said at the time.
But he never said "I am staying at OSU, I have no interest in the LSU job, I will be the coach at OSU next season." At least no press reports I can find from that time said so. They all indicated that he did not deny or affirm his interest in LSU.

tigerinridgeland-
thanks for the recap...this is as good of an overview of that situation as I've seen.
Everyone wants to try and draw parallels between this current situation and the OSU situation and say they're exactly the same.
They're NOT! thanks for giving solid examples of the differences...

Yeah, I agree ... I never really knew (or cared I guess) what happened on the other end and was just curious. Thanks to all.

keep in mind that T Boone Pickens did not like Miles (Miles was resistant to Pickens infleunce on the program) and T Boone Pickens loved Gundy (a HC he knew he could control with his wallet) so once Pickens said it was ok to let Miles go to LSU, as far as OSU was concerned it was over with anyway.
Pickens donated $70mm in 2003 but he donated $165mm on December 30, 2005 but it was placed in a hedge fund that Pickens controlled through his BP Capital Management.
Read into that what you will

On ESPN's Pardon the Interruption, Michael Wilbon said that after these gifts, Pickens "is now the owner of Oklahoma State athletics", and remarked that "no coach should dare run afoul of Pickens now...He's got everyone in Stillwater in his pocket, which is dangerous."

T Boone Pickens wanted him fired and what Pickens wants, Pickens gets. He bankrolls the entire athletic program. Miles was smart and got out before Pickens screwed him.

I think when Miles was at Okie S he was just talking to LSU by helping them in their search for a head coach.

Moots, thanks for the compliment. I just went back and pulled up all the news reports regarding the situation from the time that Saban announced through the time the announcment of Miles' hiring. The record is plain. The simple truth is that Miles didn't make the kind of statements about staying at OSU and not going to LSU that he has made about LSU and Michigan. Apples and oranges. Sorry to some posters if that isn't compatible with the picture that they want to paint now or remember from back then, but just the simple truth.
