You are confusing what LSU owes Miles if he is fired (liquidated damages) with what Miles owes LSU if he leaves on his own (the "buyout").

Miles has 4 years left on his deal IIRC. According to the last one USAToday had on their site, if fired LSU would owe Les his remaining salary, paid in monthly installments, over twice the remaining years. So if fired tomorrow Les would be owed liquidated damages of $44,791.67 per month for the next 8 years, with a deduction for any money he made coaching, commentating, etc. If fired a year from today it's over the next 6 years, etc.

And before you freak out about those numbers, such clauses are found in almost literally every college HC's contract, with the difference only in how it's paid. Without such a clause you couldn't get Bradley Dale Peveto to be your HC. In fact, Miles' are actually pretty good for LSU - Rich Rod, for example, was due all of his liquidated damages 60 days after he was fired. In a lump sum.

It is completely, totally different if Miles leaves on his own. Then LSU owes him nothing, and in fact you look to see if there are liquidated damages owed by HIM to LSU for the "damage" caused by leaving LSU in the lurch. Miles has such a "buyout," as of the last contract USAToday put on their website. It ONLY applies if he goes to Michigan, and it's only $1 million. And like any contract provision on Earth, it can absolutely be waived if need be.

I think Miles has a clause in his contract that states no buyout if he leaves for Michigan.

LSU would be insane to enforce the buyout. IMO we would let Miles go for way less than 15 mil

That's the buyout if Les is fired, not if someone tries to hire him away. Les has like a a $1 million buyout if he goes to UM.

I believe it's 5 years. The current deal runs thru 2019 if I'm not mistaken.

Thanks. Any chance you have a link to the new one? USAToday doesn't include PDF's of the contracts in their database anymore.

No, sorry. I just remember thinking when Alleva gave him the extension that it would run thru 2019.

Ya, I think this is the time Les comes. Hope he brings Pelini with him.

Les turned you guys down twice before. Why would he want to go to rebuild your shitty program now (that he's older and knows he can pretty much stay in BR as long as he wins 8+ games a season.

I'm with you. I'm inclined to believe that he has never been offered the gig. From what I've read, UM is highly political. In 2007 Lloyd Carr and company intervened on Miles getting the job. Then in 2011, Dave Brandon was never going to offer Les the gig.

I have no idea where Hackett (interim AD) lies, but I think that if Les gets an offer, he will seriously consider it.

Please correct me if any of this is wrong. You would know better than me.

He was offered in 07. Called Bill Martin (AD) to accept before the SECCG. Martin had gone sailing and told his secretary he wasn't to be disrupted by anyone. They couldn't get in touch, les tells the secratry they will talk after the game. Then Herbies Miles to Michigan happeneded before the game. Forced Les' hand, and he stayed in BR.

I don't know how Hackett feels about Les either. I know Lloyd and the Moellers still don't like him. They should have no say anymore IMO.

Assuming the Harbaugh brothers stay in the NFL (and theres no reason to think they wont), would Les be the first choice among available candidates?

I would think among the fans, yes. I have no idea what the new administration is thinking though.

He didn't give you a chance to offer it. In 2007 he went on national TV to reject it before it was offered before the sec championship game.
