What was Neilson's buyout number in his contract?

and why wouldn't we just pay it? I can't imagine a DL coach in the NFL would have an unmanageable buyout number. This just makes no sense how something like that would be a hurdle that would kill the deal.

he was named Assistant HC and new 3-year contract

Ryan Nielsen will get a new 3-year contract and the added title of assistant head coach with the Saints, per source.

Dan Campbell had the title of asst. head coach before leaving for the Lions. So Nielsen will take on some of the leadership duties associated with that role.

He’s the DC in waiting for the Saints. Who wouldn’t want to stay for that?

I'm starting to think that He offered Nielsen the DC job in Nola if Allen leaves for the Eagles HC, gave him an extension, sold him on "hey Dennis Allen will be a HC soon, stay here and be my DC" and stay in the NFL

yeah, after he wasn't given a release to go to LSU, according to reports at least. LSU would have given him a 3 year deal making as much as the Saints are likely paying him. The title of AHC doesn't really mean much either.

So what if Allen stays? Is he an AHC too since he is the actual DC?

Maybe Nielsen is the Assistant to the Assistant Head Coach.

If thats the case, why not let him go to CFB and get to calling plays to get better and then bring him back when Allen leaves?

very unlikely a DL coach is making the same as a DC at LSU given what we've paid the last two guys. Aranda and Pelini both made more than most NFL coordinators.

unless he's a DC in New Orleans in 2021, how?

are you asking why someone would prefer to groom an employee they really like from within their own organization vs having him leave and letting another do it?

Because Allen may be gone in a few weeks. No guarantees and especially after what happened to Joe Brady, Saints don’t want that to happen again

He didn't have one. His contract straight up said that he couldn't take the position without permission.

He was probably making $200-300k/year - that looks to be the average position coach salary, I'm guessing he'll get a bump to the $400-500k/year range with his new contract, and if Allen leaves for a HC job and RN becomes the Saints DC, I would guess he'd be at the $1-1.5MM.

There is no way LSU couldn't afford the buy-out for RN if he really wanted to become the DC. I'm not buying the bullshite "Oh the Saints wouldn't let him out of the contract". no shite, its not their job to let him out.

There are always going to be liquidated damages clauses for breaking an employment contract. They can't force you to work. They can only seek relief and monetary damages if you refuse to honor the contract. If there was no specific buyout clause or liquidated damages clause (something I doubt), that would actually be better financially for LSU because there is no way that number would be the remainder of his contract.

Yeah but more playcalling experience would be a benefit for him/them.

Or what? He’d be executed? There is no such thing as an unbreakable contract. He might have had to pay a monetary penalty. Maybe the Saints could get an injunction if there was a non-compete. But that would be a bad look on the Saints to enforce. And LSU and the Saints aren’t competitors so it probably wouldn’t be enforceable.

Yup. The whole “the Saints blocked him from leaving” story is bullshite. If he wanted to be at LSU, he would be.
