Buyout was not the problem it was stipulations in his contract that wouldn't let him out not money.

The whole “the Saints blocked him from leaving” story is bullshite. If he wanted to be at LSU, he would be.
Do yall think Ryan Nielsen would be help prisoner by the Saints and continue to coach for Payton if he really didn't want to?
If his #1 priority was to be Defensive Coordinator at LSU, he would be.
His #1 priority was getting a promotion from the Saints and staying in the NFL.
The Paytom "Snub" by Captain Ed (No doubt in my mind it happened) just made it easier for that to happen.

I'm starting to think that He offered Nielsen the DC job in Nola if Allen leaves for the Eagles HC, gave him an extension, sold him on "hey Dennis Allen will be a HC soon, stay here and be my DC" and stay in the NFL
This actually makes sense considering he passed on a lot more money in the short-term. His “raise” will still leave a lot of money on the table until he gets that gig.

There are always going to be liquidated damages clauses for breaking an employment contract. They can't force you to work. They can only seek relief and monetary damages if you refuse to honor the contract. If there was no specific buyout clause or liquidated damages clause (something I doubt), that would actually be better financially for LSU because there is no way that number would be the remainder of his contract.
I have a feeling optics played a role in his decision, as well. If he were to break his contract with an NFL team against their wishes with a raise and promotion path on the table, how would that look to other NFL teams in the future? If Nielsen sees his long-term future in the pros, it makes more sense to pass on more money at LSU now and avoid any negative fallout that could follow him when he wants to return to the league.
I have no doubt the Saints FO used this as leverage.
