Miles and Malzahn come to mind, but there are others.

It’s just fricking crazy.

Schools have to stop firing coaches before the end of the contract

Tubbs/Chiz, Auburn is a serial violator of this idiocy.

At least we kept miles for a few years. Firing a coach the very next year should get about 10 people in the admin fired, including the board.

Exactly. Coaches will hold that leverage for as long as colleges are out there triggering the buyout clause.

Stop giving raises/extensions before being in last 2 years of contract and structure contract more on year to year performance. Win and be rewarded, tank and your pay tanks.

First step is to stop having pointless ADs negotiate with professional agents.

Miles was like $9-million for 5 or so years?

While not chump change by any means, it wasn't crazy.

Gus is north of $30-million and from what I've read, like $16-million up front and 4 a year over 4 years. That's insanity.

It will be used against them in recruiting if you let them get to the end of their contract.

Poor performance should be a reasonable cause to fire coaches. Period.

How are you ever going to get there if contracts keep getting extended for recruiting? O has 3 years left and he's supposedly getting an extension that he doesn't deserve.

Gus is getting more than 2.5 times what both of them got combined.

Never. There are more programs capable of big time success than there are coaches who can deliver it.

Which is impossible because according to coaches they can't recruit unless they have at least a 4 year contract.

I shudder to think what a guy like Alleva does in those negotiations. He probably has to put a catheter in before so they can't see him piss down his leg.

I say this all the time. People say that's what it takes to keep them. HELL, we will want to get rid of them one day. Remember before that coach came to us, someone else was sure enough tired of their crap.

Bret Bielema getting paid $14 million to go away after going 11-29 in SEC play was the moment I realized that college football had hit the tipping point.

Keep in mind he got that big extension and buyout after a 6-6 season, when his career SEC record was 2-14.

Not if all programs quit extending contracts as a matter of practice.
