Then the underwhelming performance at UT. Herman is overrated.

Every coach has “bad losses”

In 2 years at Houston he beat Louisville x2 (when they were good - had L Jackson), Florida State (when they were good), and OU.

People forget you’re managing 100+ teenagers and 21 year olds. shite happens and you will lose a game you’re not supposed to. Even Saban.

He made Texas better while he was there. 4 straight bowl wins after Strong had completely guttered the program. I'm not sure how he "failed" at Texas.

The guy he replaced 16-21 (12-15) 1 bowl loss in 3 seasons
Him 32-18 (22-13) 4 bowl wins in 4 seasons
The guy that replaced him 4-7 (2-6) won't sniff a bowl

You tell me where the issues lie.

Texas is the problem. Far too many hands in the cookie jar and all of them feel they are entitled to dictate who is going to play and how they are going to play.

Herman made a bowl game and won said bowl game in all 4 years he was the head coach at UT. They replaced him with a guy that is about to finish with a worse record than even Charlie Strong was able to pull off while at UT. Yikes, seems like a major downgrade to me.

There is a core of 10 boosters at UT whose asses you have to continually kiss if you want to be there for any period of time....among other things.

Mostly UT. They’ve hired good coaches on paper, but the booster/admin situation at that school is as toxic and dysfunctional as it comes.

I think Herman will be successful somewhere else before Texas becomes successful again. Herman is a good coach and his biggest frick up was choosing UT over LSU. He will land somewhere and he should do a better job of picking his next job. People go to UT b/c they will throw money at the HC. But $$$ doesn't translate to wins.

He lost a total of 4 games at Houston, all were to conference teams.

Some of you have no perspective and there isn't a coach in history that hasn't lost games to lesser or worse teams

UT is the problem. He’s a good coach although a bit weird. I think he would’ve turned it around in another year or two.

Those are all teams in his conference and Navy won the division that year. Losing to UConn is not the same at UH as at LSU or UT.

Herman is a good coach but he was a straight fricking mess off the field. He rubs a lot of people the wrong way and made bad staff decisions, Jeff Traylor wanted nothing to do with him.

With more maturity, he could potentially end up being a homerun for someone down the line. I think we should've just upgraded position coaches and kept Herman.
The Horn here is on to something. And that something bridges the gap between the two answeres to OP's question...

UT was such a mess when Herman came in to revive it would take a really good staff, on the field and recruiting.

Herman drove away some really good coaches (remind us of anybody?) and that affected their recruiting and on the field performance.

So the answer is both; but Herman, because of him personally in regards to his staff, cause the turnaround to be still born.

So do you judge Saban based on his lost to UAB or his winning a championship?

Exactly. Let's not forget Saban also lost to ULM while at Bama. Many people on this board are incapable of seeing the big picture. Every coach will lose games they shouldn't.
