Several sources have informed me that everything is in place for Brent Venables to be Oklahoma’s next head coach.

I can’t say for certain whether that will be announced at the 3pm press conference, but you’d have to imagine, especially given the timing, that it’s a distinct possibility.

Assuming things are indeed finalized between Venables and Oklahoma, what a masterpiece of a job by Joe Castiglione. This coaching search literally lasted less than 24 hours.

Is it really masterful? Looks like a snap decision to me , and sadly I feel it is because LSU is getting Dabo. Why would OU want a career coordinator to be their next head coach? I would think OU could do better than that

I mean it’s a good higher but what I don’t get it is all the OU fans on the message board saying this is a grand slam

They think this is getting the band back together to build an elite D for their move to the SEC

Seems like a panic hire

He’s one of the best DC’s in America, if not the best, with a connection to OU. No need to overthink it.

Georgia hired Kirby, and I'd say it's working out well for them.

Defense will never be an issue. They might be getting DJ as well.

Let me guess, Woody had no intention of giving him an offer either.

This is not a panic hire. Venables is well known to OU. He has always been really liked by the administration. OU likes to hire Coordinators as head coach (Wilkinson, Switzer, Stoops, Riley).

It's not a matter of being masterful or not. They really didn't see the Riley thing coming, which has led the class to fall apart in the last 24hours.
I suspect Castiglione had his short list ready to go with Riley linked to jobs left and right the past few years. So he went after it.

Now the next question is, who does he bring as OC.

Not saying he’d be bad, but odd Oklahoma going for a defensive guy.

Maybe I’m wrong, but it just doesnt “feel” like Venebles will be a big winner as a HC.
