Agreed the stint at Ole Miss is Orgeron's main flaw.

Plus Bowling Green was the team who hired Meyer without coordinator experience. Not UF, OSU or even Utah. He never would have been able to skip from Notre Dame WR coach to UF head coach or OSU head coach.

Bob Davie's coaching tree at ND is quite something. Urban Meyer, Charlie Strong, Steve Addazio, Dan Mullen, Greg Mattison. He had quite the eye for coaching talent. He still finished .583 with that staff though.

There's got to be no other coach in CFB history who put together such an excellent staff yet did so horrendously with it.

Don't forget to point out that if you're not for Orgeron then you're obviously anti lsu.

I mean why else wouldn't you want someone with a better than 10-25 record at ole miss and overall 19-27 to be the HC at lsu??? Just doesn't make any sense.

The best thing for LSU is the guy who beat ole miss, usm, and Mizzou. That's all you need to know. That means he has learned from his mistakes and PROVES he is the best person to be HC at LSU. If you disagree you like Tony Romo or some shite. At least that's what i was told.

This isn't about mental gymnastics. It's about people making absurd comments like no coordinator experience should eliminate any candidate.

The point is two coaches that either have won or made it to an NC game in the last 3 years never served as coordinators of any kind.

If people want to argue Orgeron's merit based on his Ole Miss time, then by all means that makes sense. By claiming that he hasn't been a coordinator is just stupid.

I am in no way advocating for Orgeron as the full time head coach at LSU. If that is how they go, I'll be a little disappointed, but understand why they took the risk.

That said, I'd put him way down the line with other choices that I'd take ahead of him including Fisher, Petrino ( ), amongst others.

Unfortunately that doesn't matter. What matters to some is that O never was a coordinator.

Urban ran his own offense at BG and Utah. He was about as innovative as they come.

He's one of the few that skilled OC early in his career because he was so good at offense he went straight to HC.
I don't think O fits that category

Nobody is saying JUST that. Its a combination of him failing at OM and not going up to be a DC to redeem himself.

If he wants to be the HC at LSU, he shouldve tried it get jobs above Dline coach to improve his resume.

Oh wait, he did try and nobody hired him.

Oh my I missed this post.

You think lsu knows something no one else knows? You think lsu should be taking a chance on a coach that suracue was willing to take a chance on?

Sure, they may all be very wrong and O turns out to be great...but it's obviously not likely.

I think Urban Meyer is CEO type coach instead a offensive guru as describe in other threads. He's had great assistants to propel him. Guys like Kyle whittingham, dan Mullen, Charlie strong, tom Herman, Mike Sanford, and doc holiday all helped him win great games. His brilliant mind didn't do it alone...

Hell even Saban only won titles w/ Jimbo, mcelwain, and lane...no title w/ nussmeier or applewhite

I don't blame O for making sure he has the best coordinators avail

Sometimes when coaches get their first shots, they don't pan out.

Bellichik didn't make it in Cleveland, then is considered a GOAT coach in New England.

Pete Carroll wasn't so hot in New England, but turned USC and the Seahawks into championship teams.

Sometimes the first go around happens too early, at the wrong time, etc.

O may still fail but the past is just that, the past. He also may have learned from his mistakes and what went wrong.

Saban is a better coach by miles for his failures in the NFL. Sometimes it takes those types of experiences to make you a better coach.

You should always hire proven failures because you never know who is the next Belichick or Carroll.

Do you realize how asinine a decision heuristic that is?

The logic behind that thinking.

I've rounded up people who learned a lot from their failures that are eligible to be LSU's coach since they might be Pete Carroll or Bill Belichick.

Doug Mallory
Bradley Dale Peveto
Derek Dooley
Houston Nutt
Charlie Weiss
Turner Gill
Al Golden
Joker Phillips

I bet there's a Caroll or Belichick in there somewhere. Interview them all.

I submit to you, old Bobby Bowden in 2009.

Jody Allen, Defensive Ends, Special Teams Coordinator
Chuck Amato, Executive Head Coach, Linebackers
Mickey Andrews, Associate Head Coach, Defensive Coordinator, Defensive Backs
Dexter Carter, Running Backs
James Coley, Tight Ends, Recruiting Coordinator
Lawrence Dawsey, Wide Receivers
Jimbo Fisher, Offensive Coordinator, Quarterbacks
Odell Haggins, Defensive Tackles
Bob LaCivita, Dir of Player Personnel
Todd Stroud, Strength and Conditioning
Rick Trickett, Assistant Head Coach, Offensive Line

FSU went 7-6

I'm not sure what problem you are having here. I'm making the point that because some outliers struggled, that doesn't make it a feather in your cap for a coaching job. You're following up my use of hyperbole to slam that point home by saying that they are outliers and you shouldn't do that. We're saying the same thing, but only one of us realizes it.
