re: Turner Gill to Kansas

Don't know a lot about Gill, but he has a good agent. His name is out there. I read that he is going after a lot of X HCs for his staff. For someone with not much experience this could be a wise thing. Plus, it shows a lot of confidence in himself. Most young coaches are afraid to hire up. Look at Larry Porter....he is setting himself up to fail by highing high school friends who coach. Gill will do better, IMHO.

Memphis doesn't have the budget to pay coaches what Kansas can pay for staff.

Why would he want to jump ship after 5-6 years if he builds the program into something?
there are many better programs
kansas: shitty weather, shitty division, and absolutely horrible in-state recruiting. no chance to win the conference consistently

I want someone to explain to me why this is a good hire?
Posted on 12/13/09 at 11:08 am to Ponchy Tiger
buffalo was the worst 1A program and gill made them OK, and within that span they did win their conference

He has had seasons of
2-10
5-7
8-6
5-7
he has a 20-30 record as a head coach. Now it may turn out to be a good hire, time will tell. But you must also be honest with yourself.
If Turner Gill was white he never would have been hired with a record like that. Gill's rep has been created by the media trying to promote black coaches. Gill was hired as a politcal move after the mess Mangino made up there.
Oh and since when does a coach doing a "OK" job make him a good hire to move up the ladder.

Why don't you look at what Buffalo did in the FBS before Gill got there?
0-11
2-9
3-8
1-11
1-11
2-9
1-10
No season with more than 3 wins 4 seasons with one and fewer
Compare
2-10
5-7
8-6
5-7
That's a big turnaround. Buffalo was probably one of the 5 worst FBS jobs and Gill at least brought them hope.
Chizik is white and got hired with a worse record to a better job, so no.

It will be interesting to see how many kids Gill can get from Coffeyville, Ft. Scott, Garden City, etc instead of the High School ranks. I think the Kansas JUCO system is very good but can not be the only way to build the program.

no
gill is a big name from his playing days
what he did in 2008 at buffalo was a miracle
that's why he has a rep

As I said if Chizik can get hired with a 5-13 record as a head coach then a 20-30 coach in an infinitely shittier situation can get hired without race being a factor.

Judging a team by looking at their schedule and making that assumption is beyond ridiculous if you never watched them. They also beat VT that year in the Orange Bowl. VT may not have been as good as Missouri, but they were no slouch either. KU probably gained a lot more hype than they deserved, but they weren't a bad team.

they were the 4th best team in their conference

Second, Chizik's was considered by many to be the best D coordinator in the country prior to taking the Iowa St job. Had a major school hired him after his UT DC job, nobody would have questioned it. Many were wondering why he didn't hold out for a better job at the time. His performance at Iowa St tarnished his resume, but I guess a crappy record with a bottom dweller in a good conference didn't deter everyone. I would not have hired him, but you can definitely make a better argument for him than Gill.

gill raised his program. chizik lowered his program
AU is on a different level in terms of CFB tiers than KU also

chizik goes to ISU and it gets worse
gill goes to Buffalo and it gets better
and chizik > gill?

1) AU>Kansas
2) 20-30>5-13
3) ISU>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Buffalo

Not really. His history as DC would be relevant if AU had hired him as a DC. They hired him as a HC though.

So VT wasn't a "good" team? Okay.
Your expertise is so beneficial. Thanks.

da frick? if he goes to 2 bcs bowls in the next 5 or 6 years at KU he will be the next coach at ______ (fill in big time program)
i doubt KU can/will open up the check book to the tune of $6 mil per for a football coach (hell at current inflation of football coaches it may be $8mil)
Why would he want to jump ship after 5-6 years if he builds the program into something? Where else would he go besides Nebraska? You underestimate the size of KU's checkbook.
you underestimate how lousy Kansas' recruiting base happens to be.Big 12 north is the weakest division in CFB.

Okay, the fact that they've tapped into Texas and had a Top 40 recruiting class last season doesn't mean shite does it? Or the fact that Turner Gill has received high acclaim for his recruiting abilities. He's got guys from one of the most talent-rich regions in Florida (Miami/Fort Lauderdale) going to fricking Buffalo. Those 2* kids probably look like 4's against some of the competition in Kansas. I understand it's hard for some of you to realize that some teams do rise up and better themselves. I'm not calling for national titles or anything because that's probably not going to happen anytime soon. But to say we have a lousy recruiting base shows you have no clue about it.
