Come on Brad. KU is a stepping stone job. It's a basketball school, just like UNC and UNC has more resources and better climate. That is no shot at Kansas. I think Gill is a good hire. He played in that area and probably has some good ties. I think it is a very good hire for Kansas.

The fact is, they want to become relevant in college football. There's nothing wrong with that. Gill may not jump ship on us like a Brian Kelly or Nick Saban is all I'm saying. He doesn't come off that way. Now that I think about it, I'm glad we took Gill as opposed to Holtz, Tuberville, Harbaugh, or whoever else.

I think someone can come in and win at Kansas. It's a BCS school and you can possibly win a NC there, due to the Big 12 prestige. Very little in-state talent and bad weather will keep KU from becoming a top 15 type program. That's why it is a stepping stone job. A very good job, but for a top notch coach, still a stepping stone job.

No, I really don't. If Gill has sustained success for 5-6 years, and perhaps wins a few North Division titles, and on top of that has his team in the Top 10/15 for a couple of seasons, KU has the money to match any offer out there. What if he is just happy with being in Lawrence? Some coaches don't come off as pompous asses like Brian Kelly or Nick Saban, whom are all about the money and recognition from likes of Notre Dame and Alabama.

Nebraska's weather and in-state talent is comparable; they seem to do fine.

And really, Gill isn't a top notch coach just yet. He had one good season at Buffalo, and everyone is ready to give him more prestige to his name than he's earned, IMHO. I don't doubt his abilities one bit, but to say he's a top notch coach right now is a little overboard.

And I know, the "2007 was a fluke" comments are going to come out, but I doubt many of you watched them that season. They did beat Virginia Tech, a team that was thrashed by LSU that same season, in the Orange Bowl. They were a solid team from top to bottom. Since then, they've had some enormous holes to fill on both sides of the ball. They're young right now, but they'll be back.

I don't doubt this at all. However, I think for many coaches, program prestige and a 'name' matters to their ego.

True, but they have tradition that helps. However, I don't think NU can get back to where they were. Top 20 program, but no better IMO.

I agree he is not a big time coach. Nor do I think he is a lock to be a great coach. But from where KU is as a program right now, I think taking a chance at a guy that has the potential to be a great coach is the right move. I am not sure Tuberville would have been the best fit, with the in-state talent and his lack of recruiting. KU needs a guy that will be a good salesman and recruiter to build the program.

I know that tradition helps Nebraska, but you have to start somewhere. I'm just trying to be optimistic. In all honesty, I'm an LSU fan first; being a KU student, obviously I want them to do well.

Gill picked up guys that played in one of the most talent-rich areas in Florida to go to Buffalo. Those kids probably look like 4's and 5's compared to the talent in Kansas. If we can sign kids like that from the Southeast and Texas on a consistent basis, we can be a strong contender within the conference.

Anyway, I know you replied after I edited, but what if he is happy in Lawrence, and he just wants to be there? KU can make his life worthwhile as far as money goes. That's no issue. To me, Gill comes off as a modest, charismatic individual, who is more concerned about molding young men into winners both on and off the field.

I hope KU, NU, and Colorado come back to being good programs. The North needs to improve and start to take away players and wins from Texas and OU.

I agree and KU is a place where a guy can come in, build a great program, and be the grandaddy of a football program with his statue in front of the stadium and all. Gill may be that person.

I would just like my stint as a student here to be worthwhile at Memorial Stadium. I could give a rat's arse about basketball. Football is my favorite sport overall, and it'd be nice to experience what they did in 2007 on a regular basis. Maybe not 12-1 every year, but as long as we're competing at the highest level and not losing seven straight games to end the season.

But I agree, Gill could be the face of this program. I know a lot of credit should go to Mangino for bringing them from the depths, but Gill can really take them places if he plays his cards right and works his arse off to make things happen.

I agree with the posters saying that Kansas is not perceived to be a great football job. And it would probably be a stepping stone to certain programs with more historical success - Bama, LSU, USC, ND, etc.

But I will say that Lawrence is a great college town. Gill will love that town especially compared to Buffalo.

And with a little success and a little cash to go with it, he'll love it even more. frick it. I'm going to Lawrence tonight.

KU is about the 7th best job in its own conference. you cant win a NC there (in football) and will always be 2nd fiddle to the BB program. the best you can hope for is a competative team every year and winning the bigXII north every couple of years.

If Turner Gill can get along with Self better than Roy and Allen got along then he will be fine. If Self goes on a Williams type power trip and demand everything for basketball, then he will not have a very good run there.

KU is a job where he can make a run every few years, but KU doesn't have the recruiting base to compete on a national level

And don't say Nebraska blah blah blah because Nebraska has never been the same since the death of the partial qualifier and has 10x better fan support.

As I see it....

the perfect storm could come to pass

a) Kansas has success for let's say 3 years

b) Pelini, does not reach the goals in 3 years....

Turner Gill can be in Nebraska again.

I wish Bo well and I am not saying he will not do well...
I am saying that if Gill performs above expectations and Bo performs below or falters,

the door will be open.

BTW..
Kansas plays a somewhat difficult schedule--at least by Big 12 standards..in 2009
Texas
Nebraska
Texas Tech
Oklahoma
Missouri
Colorado

At Buffalo
2-10
5-7
8-6
5-7

I would be very dissapointed if I were a Kansas fan. His resume is nowhere near BCS quality. Urban Meyer was better at Bowling Green than Gill at Buffalo (both MAC schools) and that only got Meyer a job a Utah. Excessive hype due to his race increased his name recognition and got him a better job than he should have gotten.

Before any of you idiots go there, I think Charlie Strong was a good hire that should have had a HC job a few years ago.
